Thread: Formula Student Germany / End of Endurance / Master Switch

    Hello,

is it true, that after finishing the endurance at FSG, the marshalls will turn off the car with the Primary Master Switch?

Or is it allowed to let the driver stop the engine with the cockpit mounted master switch?

How ist the procedure while driver change?

    The rules say:

Other than changes to accommodate the second driver or covered by D3.8.2 “Tire Changing” and turning on and off the car with the master switch, the team is not permitted to perform any work on the car during Driver Change.

I'm asking, because we'll lose our logged data when directly switching of the Primary Master Switch.

    Jakob,
we will not touch your Primary Master Switch after a successful finish of the Endurance.
The "End of Endurance"-Marshals who accompany your car to refueling will just signalise your driver to stop the engine, but you will have to switch off the Primary Master Switch at least when approaching the fuel station.
Therefore you should find a way to quickly save your logging data after the CMMS has been used.
Why don't you just write your data periodic e.g. every ten seconds or every minute for example? That would solve the problem, especially if something unforeseen happens during testing and you have to shut down the car by the Master Switch. You would loose all your data in that case.

That would violate rule B11.2.1b, unless you are talking about a super-capacitor or similar which only powers the logger itself and is prevented from powering the rest of the car by using diodes for example or which sits in the secondary part of the power supply of the logger.

    Ok, thanks for the information.

The data will be saved when using the CMMS, so no problem.

Periodic saving of the data is a good idea, but this will result every time in a "new season" in our (bought) analyse-software. I think that's is not so ideal for the analysis of the data, but better than loosing all our data when using the Primary Master Switch. I'll think about it.

If you do find they want you to use the master switch are you able to put a small battery in to maintain power to your logger so you won't lose data? I know in FSAE-A they had no problem with us using the cockpit switch, so long as the engine was stopped.

    Jakob,
I don't know how things are done at FSG, but in principal, the only time someone other than a team member should touch the master switch is when testing the switch during technical inspection, either at the initial inspection and when the switch is checked at the end of the noise test, or in an emergency out on the track. There is no valid reason for non-team members to be doing otherwise.
