Just replying to move this thread up the page as I believe it deserves to be read over a number of times. Since I am not involved in FSAE I don't write much but read this forum a lot. I have been...
Mola gives immediate mention of the internal work and papers of M. Olley and J. Bidwell in the preface to his book. So I would say it is a pretty sure bet that he used Olley's materials.
I own...
Mr. Milliken,
Yes, I have had a copy of Gillespie for years. Mola is much narrower in scope, but each equation, in each section, is derived from the ground up from either Newton's laws or...
I am looking to purchase a copy of "Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics" by Simone Mola published by General Motors Institute in 1969. Last printing was 1986.
Recently was able to obtain a copy...
Z,
I, for one, would find it informative I'm sure. But, as my 'Z binder' is turning into a textbook size, I realize one can only ask for a finite amount of 'free' education. :(
Ralph
.
Z,
I will take a 10% error over having nothing at all.
After all, in almost all cases I am interested in the relative size of some effect, not calculating an exact number for the purposes...
DougMilliken,
Thank you for the link, I never knew that.
I am very familiar with the spreadsheet method you propose and it works well with attention to detail in setting up a measurement...
Z,
First, thank you for all of your work. It is as per usual clear, concise and most important a nicely compact piece of educational material.
Second, my question.
Outside of the realm of...
I knew you would respond, correct on every count by the way, BillCobb. I got to thinking about Z's posts on the long wheelbase bus, then the kinematics of a bicycle model on rails that he suggested...
Z,
The arrows simply represent the individual coordinate systems of Earth (shown in all pictures on the tile floor grid), body front truck pivot, body rear truck pivot, and an assumed body CG in...
Attached (I hope) are a few photos of a very crude example of the kinematics I believe Z was trying to describe on page 10 of this thread.
After reading his post I had a look in the attic and in a...
Claude Rouelle,
Ok, I'm hooked. Found several more good videos of the same vintage listed after watching the one you posted.
Being an old tool & model maker you will appreciate my affection...
DougMilliken,
Agreed. But, with some thought they might be improved to allow some lateral movement. Good Weaver plates or equivalent are quite expensive for the amateur or occasional use.
...
Poor mans turn plates.

BillCobb,
I believe the YouTube video, while a gross exaggeration of the variable velocity effect, does show your reference of 'lumpy steering'. I hope that is correct and it does demonstrate why...
Claude Rouelle,

Maybe pertinent, maybe not.

Doug Milliken,
Might I suggest the large diameter degree wheels used by engine builders. Usually made from aluminum plate.
Sorry, BillCobb, some of the old caveman leopard skins still work and...
I was wondering if anyone could provide a brief review of the book 'The Science of Vehicle Dynamics' by Massimo Guiggiani?
Good, poor? New perspective or more of the same?
In short, having all...
Edited and removed.
Deleted as per above edit.
I have deleted this entire post with apologies to Mr. Douglas Milliken.
A bad example of posting first and thinking later.
Apologies to all.
Ralph
Question for those who have used the late Bill Mitchell's WinGeo kinematics software, what solid axle suspension layouts are supported? I have only briefly played around with an older demo version...
Z,
I've been quiet lately on the forum but reading intently. Thanks for all of the work to produce the above. Lots to study!
Ralph
I believe I warned you at some point Z, that I can't resist heavy sarcasm! It is part of my DNA. :)
Still working with, sketching and thinking about 2 DOF linkages. I'm getting there, just more...
