Hello,
We are trying to get a class started at ASU to get students credit hours for FSAE-related studies. The professors have very little experience with FSAE, and we have almost no experience ourselves. Of those of you who have been part of teams that have FSAE integrated into your curriculum, how is the class structured? Is it a lecture-based class? project based? what prereq's are there? WHat else haven't we thought of?

At our school the credit is structured as an Independent Study. The professor overseeing the Independent Study is our faculty advisor. The classes can be taken by people on the Formula, Baja, Snowmobile or FutureTruck teams. There are basically two types of independent study, regular and design tech elective. The design tech elective requires much more documentation, and a lengthy report at the end of the semester. You must also undertake a system of some importance. In return you can use the credits earn to satisfy elective design courses that MEs need to graduate.
The courses are in the ME catalog, so it doesn't necessarily benefit EEs to take them. In situations where EEs wanted credit for a project, some where able to take a special independent study if a EE professor agreed to oversee it.

There is a two term design course already in the curriculum at our school, which every engineering student has to take. Projects from corporate sponsors are usually what is offered in this course, but we've been lucky to be allowed to offer several projects where the formula team is the sponsor. Thats how the main brunt of the work is done each year.

We have three courses in which students can get credit for FSAE. As a technical elective, students study the theory of suspension, intake and exhaust design, frame design, etc. The class is mostly driven by students but structured by the faculty advisor. In addition, FSAE can be used to fullfill the requirements for 1st and 2nd semester capstone design.
FSAE projects are also integrated into the senior lab course and some tech elective projects as long as there is interest.
We provide money and project scope for some EE/ECE capstone design projects.
