For those of you who run dry sump oil systems, what do you do for your oil pickups? Previously, we have manufactured ours by shaping sheet metal and it was somewhat difficult to get decent results. I am thinking of making some machined pickups or possibly modifying some purchased pickups. Also, we have previously used steel tube for the oil lines that go from the pickups to the outside of the engine case, and this has usually involved manual bending of the tubing, which is not easy to do well. Would there be any reason to not use aluminum tubing instead?

Aluminum will be no problem. Just slot the bottom of the tubing for the pickup. Most small dry sump pumps like a .2-.3 in^2 hole for the pickup.

So are you saying to put a hole in the tube, rather than having a little screen basket on the end like most pickups have?

yes, just make a 1/4" x 1" slot on the bottom of the tube and mount an inline screen filter before the scavange pump.

Anand,
What will happen to the oil when you turn, accelerate, or brake the car?
You want your pickups located so that under any (reasonable) set of conditions that could slosh the oil, there is always a pickup where the oil will slosh to, so that you don't end up with all of your pickups uncovered.
Depending on pan geometry you may be able to accomplish this fine with only one pickup, but that usually means that your pan is too deep.
Best,
Drew
