I was wondering if anyone else would be attending the 2004 SAE motorsport conference in Dearborn on Nov. 30-Dec.2? Has anyone attended them before? Did you learn alot?

I wanted to go but it is the last week of our term. But from the variety of topics and source of the topics I think it would be a great experience.

I've been a few times, and will go again this year if I can swing it.

Usually the papers are pretty good, and lots of interesting characters in the audience (many you've heard of, read their books, etc.).

There are ~7 guys from Waterloo going... will have to miss the last week of classes, but it seems worth it.

Worth going! Only every two years too. 2002 was a good experience for me. I've got a pretty close hotel if anyone wants to share expenses. I'm there all week.

how much are you paying for the hotel room cause I was going to book it through SAE and it was going to be $135. I am also trying to get the school to pay for it, so you might be able to room up with me if you want. The hotel is the same as the conference.

Screw that, The conference hotel is for rich folks with jobs. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I am at a Holiday Inn very close to the conference, maybe a half mile. Not sure exactly how much it was, but less than $75 I'd say for sure.

If you can get the school to pay for it, more power to you. I'm a participant and can't even do that. I'd love a free room, let me know if that happens.

Charlie, Alabama is taking a group of four up, three senior ME's and one EE. I believe already have a room at the red roof inn....is that far or do you know. We are also leaving for the entire week, but we are driving. If you are driving, are you leaving on Monday morning like us??

Hey man, I didn't expect anyone from the Southeast to be driving up there or I might have been interested. As it stands I am flying and that way I don't miss Monday or Friday classes. See you there, or if you don't have a room yet let me know.

hey guys,
i havent been to the conference and i think this is the first time i heard about it. My advisor suggested that i go, and he's willing to sign off on our FSAE budget to pay for my trip.

But i really dont know what the conference is all about. All i know is that it's being attended by Max Mosley and there will be several talks on motorsports.

My advisor told me that it will be a perfect place to ask for sponsorship. So any of you guys willing to share their experience?

I'd love to go, but im not sure if using the FSAE budget is worth the trip when you can use that money to buy parts etc.

The Motorsports Conference is similar to other SAE conferences, like the World Congress. It consists of 'panels', where a group of speakers talk about a subject, 'technical sessions', where SAE papers recently published with a motorsports slant are orally presented by the author(s), and also some special events like tours of plants, etc.

The 'Young Engineers Panel' in 2002 was a very good experience for me. I went in 02 and enjoyed it very much.

Considering it is free for students and only every 2 years, you'd be foolish to not consider it IMO.

As for finding sponsors, well I kinda doubt it is a good place to do that. You might very well make some contacts that lead to sponsorship, but the conference consists mostly of industry professionals and I think it doesn't lend itself well to solicitation.

I do think it will be a decent place to job search though.

There is plenty of info about the conference on SAE's website.

thanks for the info charlie. Yeah ... i think i might wanna reconsider about not going to the conference.

I hope the flights and the rooms are not expensive, now that it's about 10 days away.

Charlie, We are leaving sometime Monday morning, driving up, may make a few pitstops on the way up, just depends on the time we have. The university paid our way as well as for the room, so it only costs us food to go. Hope to see ya there. Some one on our team told me you were giving a paper...are u?

Yes I am presenting. So far I have no takers on room sharing, nobody from our team is going. Got any extra space? I can cancel my room and I am paying for all my own shit.

Charlie,
There are 5 of us heading down to the conference from Waterloo but haven't arranged accommodations yet. We would be interested in sharing a room.

For those of you going to the conference be sure to check out Nick Trevorrow's paper and presentation on his new tire model. Nick has been part of the Monash FSAE team since the beginning, and he's still round doing PhD stuff these days.

Oh and if anyone is in the San Fran area and looking to have a few beers give us a yell as we re here for the next week.

A bunch of us from the University of Windsor were thinking of going but its much to far!! 10 minutes across the bridge seems a little too much traveling for me http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif !! 10 or more of us will be there !! See ya there.
