View Full Version : ECU dead, possible reasons?

After several test (engine run and computer test) I conducted, I found out that the ecu of our team is dead, gone, out of the game, bye-bye. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
And I really don't know why, it failed on last May after the engine was shutdown for checking and it didn't go on again. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Is a Performance Electronics ECU-1, 2-wire model, and I wanted to know what possible causes could damage or burn the unit.
I started from the fuel pump, apparently it wasn't connected trough a relay, rather connected the fuel pump to the ecu "fuel pump" output.
The other possible cause I am thinking is short circuit, but after looking at the car, I really don't see where.
Any ideas?
Performance Electronics people, where are you? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Are you saying you were running your fuel pump straight through the ECU? I'm pretty sure it should be done through a relay or you can overdraw current on the ECU and possibly blow something internally.
All conjecture though.

Hello,
Running the fuel pump directly with the ECU (no relay) could definately be a problem. It is likely that the fuel pump driver is damaged but that doesn't mean that the rest of the ECU has a problem. Please contact me via email with exactly what the symptoms are and how you checked out the ECU (brian@pe-ltd.com).

Well, I am possitive, because when I got the car in my hands, there was no relay at all connected, maybe a mistake from the previous chief.
I checked it with the ecu monitor program and nothing, there is no response from the unit.
The funny thing is that; using a voltimeter; my team guys say that there is some energy flowing, but I am not so sure if that ecu lost its programming or that there is a short circuit around.
I really don't know, since I am just a poweruser (not quite into electronics but like to play around them http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) I am really not sure how to diagnostic the unit fully.
The program says that there is no ecu unit connected, so, that means that it may be dead or the port is not functioning in my computer (I tested it, fully working).
I go with the first option.
Also, since the engine is a Honda 600CBR, I was also guessing that the wiring of the ignition could be the problem, there were connected in pairs, using the coil-on-plug configuration.
Any other ideas?

And while you are installing your VXI-440 Programmable Ignition Module, curb your hunger with Cheez-it brand snack crackers.

Nothing in this thread about ignition (except as possible cause to ECU failure), or engine performance. It's a broken ECU.
And you dug it up from several months ago.
Are you going to find every thread that mentions an engine and SPAM it? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
