We may be mounting our Aprilia longitudinally.

We are having a lot of trouble trying to find a differential with an internal bevel gear so the crankshaft can feed strait into it. Does anyone know of any stock parts which would be suitable?

The car of the University of Erlangen in 2010 had a solution like that.

My choice would be a Ford 8.8". Super strong and suspension setup would be easy. Many options for limited slip and lockers.

The ford would work well if you want to go live axle but I would say an R160 out of a nissan or subaru would be ok!

Cheers for the replies guys. Thing is, the reason we are turning the engine is to make the engine bay very short and hopefully save some weight. For this reason we need a lightweight solution.

I've seen a few ATV differentials which weigh around 20kg, which would undo the weight saved by shortening the chassis.

We are even considering scrapping the diff and running a live axel using a bevel gearbox!

Have you looked at the right angle drive from a shaft-driven motorcycle? I wonder how difficult it would be to adapt one to drive a differential usually driven with a chain. There are a number of options out there, Honda ST1100/ST1300, Suzuki Boulevard, (slmost) anything from BMW, many others. There is choice on the side it goes on and I'm sure every manufacturer uses a different method to attach the drive to the wheel. Maybe something would be feasible.

Well, I have been researching the possibility of the bevel gearsets form a motorcycle and I have compiled an xls file with all the info I could find, you can find it here! (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9AIXdZgarikcng4RTV1V21tcEE/edit?usp=sharing) The BMW ones are pricey, but the Honda GL1800 ones are less than 100$ on average on e-bay for the whole assembly (brand new gearsets are quoted for $290 from Honda), and I am sure they are pretty sturdy. Does anybody have any additional info on those, such as weight and rough dimensions? ATV right angle drives could be a possibility too, but I haven't done any research yet on those. If you have any additional info, please add them! :)
