Last night I tried clocking our new gt12, but the turbine side has a locating pin so it can only go on in one orientation. From what I can see I can't tell why the pin needs to be there, but I'm new to turbos so I'm not sure. Does anyone know if the pin is needed?

Derek, the turbine housing locating pin is to ensure correct orientation with the compressor housing mounted wastegate actuator. You can clock each housing to your heart's content, but be sure to address the wastegate mounting appropriately. Ideally you'll keep the wastegate arm with the same extended length and angle as it is in the stock orientation.
Also, be sure to keep the center housing as close to vertical (oil drain pointing down) as possible, regardless of how you rotate the end housings.

The oil outlet was the reason I wanted to clock it in the first place. Thanks for the info.
