A real easy and pretty good starting point would be exhaust scavenging and wave reflection theory. Google it.

welcome to the forum maulana,
Now, before you get flamed by a whole pile of people i'll refer you to the 1st, 2nd and 4th sticky posts in the open forum.

Make sure you have a thorough search in these forums as almost every question imaginable has been answered at some point already.
Now for your question - Exhaust design is primarily fluid dynamics.
I'm guessing you're part of a first year team? What engine are you using? obviously the exhaust is going to be different for a single cylinder than for a 4 cylinder.
If you're using a 4, I would start by investigating whether you want a 4-2-1 or a 4-1 design, both have their advantages and caveats. as far as lengths, for a first year i'd certainly stick to the same lengths as the manufacturer - the likes of honda and yamaha have probably got it pretty much perfect.
If you wanted to look at designing your own id suggest doing some reading;
"
125. The High-Speed Internal-Combustion Engine by Sir Harry R. Ricardo. THE bible of I.C. First published back in 1923. Still relevant today. If you are just starting down the road to I.C. understanding, this is a good place to start." steve fox
I would also have a really good look at www.sae.org (http://www.sae.org) and search for some papers. your college should be able to get some of them for you.
good luck
Ed
