Hey --
So when I'm looking at data sheets for different honeycombs, I come across MIL-STD-401 for crush, shear, and ultimate strength properties. Anyone have access to this standard, and can anyone give me an idea if such testing (along with the math we've all come to know and love) would be an acceptable substitute for a physical test of the crush structure?

"MIL-STD-401B, dated 26 September 1967, is hereby cancelled. Future acquisition for this item
should refer to SAE-AMS-STD-401, "Sandwich Constructions and Core Materials; General Test
Methods.""
After flipping through the sae std it only covers testing procedure and setup guidelines. Basically the data sheets you're looking at have the data generated using the procedure outlined by STD-401. If you need geometry, this will tell you but i doubt it would substitute for physical testing for our application.

Marshall-
Yea, the standard is a testing method, as the actual crush strength is dependent on all sorts of stuff. I was wondering if we could use a crush strength determined by said procedure as a substitute for a physical test. The rules don't explicitly ask for physical results, and without an instrumented press (a la WWU), and limited access to such things as a high-speed camera, I was hoping to avoid a physical test.

Could any of you please send me the SAE-AMS-STD-401 document. I am building the chassis for a SSAE car and need to know what the values obtained using this test method indicate.

Brandon,
have you looked at sae.org to see if the paper is available for purchase. We receive a discount for being student sae members
