Please read the rules. They can be found here (http://fsaeonline.com/page.aspx?pageid=e179e647-cb8c-4ab0-860c-ec69aae080a3).

"IC2.5.2 All fuel tanks must be shielded from side or rear impact collisions. Any fuel tank which is located outside the Side Impact Structure required by T3.25 or T3.34 must be shielded by structure built to T3.3, or T3.34."

It would be bonkers to think that any racing series (much less student design series!) would allow a fuel cell outside some sort of crash protection structure.

"All fuel tanks must be shielded from side or rear impact collisions"

That right there says that it MUST be shielded from a side impact collision. That tells me that you should use your side impact structure to shield your fuel tank. The exception states that if it's outside of the side impact structure, it must be shielded by a structure built to T3.3, or T3.34. Did you look up those rules? What do they refer to? Do they apply to you?

All in all, what reason do you see to place your fuel tank outside of your side impact structure?
