We got the engine runnng today with a test intake system. Its a log style restricted with OEM headers and muffler. We are running the PE ECU with the 4-cyl default. The headers are glowing within 4 minutes of running, unloaded at like 5000 revs. It runs like crap with the muffler on. It didn't sound or look right. I took the muffler off to see if it would run. It runs way better (obviously) and the the headers stayed much cooler. This is our first year with the GIXXER (2003) but I dont remember the R6 doing this. I didnt start tuning with the muffler on because the headers got so hot fast I didnt want to smoke anything. Water temp was sill below 180. Is this 'normal' for OEM mufflers and the default map?

Thanks
Chris

This may be a stupid question, but have you checked your O2 sensor when running? It seems like it might be way too lean of a mixture, hence the very hot headers.

Glowing exhaust under no load means either too much fuel or too little advance. Since this is a base map it might just need to be adjusted, or else check your injectors to see they match what the map was created for, and check your trigger to make sure TDC is really TDC. Muffler removal probably helps because less backpressure means less heat, but it's not the cause of the problem in my opinion.

Thanks guys,

We dont have an O2 hooked up yet.

Yeah, it is rich and retarded for sure (sounds like my old boss). I just never noticed the headers on the Yamaha but then I was thinking and realized we never ran that one with the ECU default timing so that explains that. That explains why it wouldnt get out of its own way either.

We are looking into on of the DIY wide band O2 kits. Guess now I can start tuning it.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Derek,

I would agree with Charlie about the mixture possibly being too rich. Extra fuel has a tendency to continue to burn in the exhaust during dyno pulls. Have you noticed any popping in the exhaust?

The default map is only meant as a good place to start and will require some definate tweaking depending on your setup. Try setting a load with the dyno and start to lean the engine out, SLOWLY. If the speed increases, you were too rich. Keep leaning it out until the speed stops increasing (or the torque begins to drop off). Good luck!!
