Hello Ladies and Gentlemen
Would like to hear how you guys have been mounting and supporting your side pods. Pics are appreciated. Also, anybody look into a composite undertray? What is a good way to bond it to the chassis.
Cheers

really easy way to mount side pods is to weld Zeus fasteners to the chassis and rivet the other part to the side pod and just pop them on and off.

Dzues tabs, springs, and buttons are the way to go! But that is just my opinion.

They are cheep, and ultra reliable. They make removing the body to service the car way easier then tradition nuts and bolts.

I have had to work on race cars that have body panels held on with Dzues buttons (AKA 1/4 turns) and cars that have bolts, wing nuts, rivets, and all other kinds of stuff. By far my favorite is the 1/4 turn. You can remove all of your body panels in just a few seconds, and put them all back on in about the same amount of time.

1/4 turn fasteners come in all different shapes and sizes, the manufacturer Dzues it the best known. You can pick the size and cost that suits your needs.

We're running a carbon/kevlar undertray this year. The battery sits on it, so it's a permanent part which is bolted to the base of the chassis. Our sidepods are L-shaped which fit to the undertray. Most of the fasteners around the car are just R-clips with a pin welded in places around the chassis with a hole in em... very simple and quick to take panels off.

Our website will be up in a couple of days. We'll probably get some pics of the undertray up there sometime soon (it's a bit of a rush job in terms of mounting - was mounted the night before our first test).

I know this is kind of old, but I was wondering if anyone has any good ways to mount the bottom of a sidepod without having a tray come all the way out to the side? I was trying to figure out how the University of Oklahoma mounted theirs, but I can't find a good picture.

Could have the sidepod be a fairly rigid structure in a "C" shape, no?

For what its worth, Dzus tabs can burn in hell IMO (or melt, whatever). So ghetto. They work, kinda, sometimes.

I just never saw good results with em. Could be that we were a bunch of clowns with em. Could be that they just suck. I'd use somethin else though.

we've used dzus fasteners in the past with good results and we will use them again this year for several things. My problem comes with the fact that there is no where to put a dzus fastener on the bottom without lifting the car off the ground. With that said I suppose we could just do that since our jacks would get the car high enough in the air to do it, but it would be a pain to take the side pod off.

Last year we used two Dzus fasteners underneath on each side. We fastened/unfastened them with a quarter.

I always hear people bag dzus fasteners but those are usually the people who dont use them right such as not setting up your thicknesses right and end up using the wrong grip length or some people cant for the life of them transfer a hole in the panel coaxially to the tab. All quarter turn fasteners are a pain if you dont use them right.

I think the slickest panel holding thing i've seen was the GRAZ team that had the single ktm engine. They had these things that went around the tubes and had little balls on the end of them with the corresponding female receptical on the panel. Just popped them right on and off. Sort of like the things that you see holding engine covers under todays cars. It was the biggest head slapping thing I have seen in years. I wish I knew where they got them. It was so cool. Judges came over and were like "So lets see what your car looks like" and literally 10 seconds later the panels were off the car.
