I have chosen a 6 to 1 steering ratio (180 deg turn on the steering wheel to turn the wheels 30 deg).

Now, how do you determine how much the rack gear should move in order to give you the 30 degs necessary.

You can use your high-school trig (small angle approximation makes it really simple), or be lazy like me and draw up a 2D sketch in SolidWorks and have it crunch the numbers for you:

Your numbers will vary, so go ahead and re-create it for yourself. Notice it's non-linear at high steer angles, and you should consider any ackerman affects etc.
