View Full Version : Headphones for Knock detection

Hey,

Just wondering what teams do for trying to detect knock on the dyno. In the past we've had someone next to the engine trying to listen in the past. Not the safest way specially when an oil line lets go onto a hot exhaust.

I've found some nice Snap-On headphones which uses 6 clamps which you bolt to the engine and can then listen to.

Has anyone had experience with similar headphone or know of any better way to detect knock?

Thanks

Are you forced induction? I've never considered knock to be an issue with these engines NA.

you will know if it knocks. just keep an eye out for it if you are running forced induction, save your money instead of buying snap on headphones.

Scott,

How much were the snap on headphones? I remember you asking at the seminar on the weekend.

We could make an electric engine knock, i think we need the headphones http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Q: how long does it take a turbo cbr f3 to detonate to death when the throttle body and restictor fall off?

A: about two seconds!

AUS$350... quite pricey but a lot better than ventilated pistons.

We are running NA this year but due to our history of destroying engines I'd rather err on the side of caution when we tune the ignition map.

i've heard from good sources that putting thermocouples on your spark plugs is a good indicator. Supposedly, the temp will shoot up immediately when knock rears its head.

maybe, a high response time pressure transducer would do the same.

i'm not sure about what other people are doing, but as scott said, we have had issues with detonation, largely due to very aggressive spark curves (above 50 degrees at high rpm) because they just keep making power. With that much advance, the limit is very fine.

I don't think knock was that much of an issue on these engines unless you mess with compression or whack on a turby? What are you lot up to there (Monash) ? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Even if you raised the compression ratio, but are still NA, you are doing something wrong, or have something screwed up if you are getting knock. I could possibly see getting some knock at WOT and really low revs, but who cares about that anyway.

If your forced induction I can understand some knock.

Knock in these engines is like a diesel engine. If your ECU screws up, and gives 40* advance at 2000 RPM, you'll hear it. Otherwise, even with 15:1 comp in our F2, we never saw knock. After about 38* timing, we saw no more power, and with our F4, we run 44*, and have kept going up, and still not heard knocking. The F4, and GSX-R love advance. I believe someone quoted the gixxer at 55* advance by 6000 from the factory. So, until your free Garrett turbos arrive, don't worry about it.......just don't hold me liable for your shattered pistons http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
