does anyone have any 3D CAD drawings of differentials? Torsen, Quaife, Taylor, any others. Preferably in Unigraphics since that is the program that we are using. I'm working on a CAD assembly model of the drivetrain and need all or most of the differential parts. my email is ubaet@vt.edu. all help is greatly appreciated. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have a model of the Torsen university special, but it is in Pro/E. Will Unigraphics import *.prt files?

Many many teams use the torsen, maybe if someone is really really really generous they might just post the file somewhere. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Is this a self-drawn model? Or something more detailed? Can you post it somewhere, or send it to ml2murph@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Mark

The model is one that i drew into Pro/E based upon the drawings from Torsen and by measuring the actual unit. I'm working on getting my university website back up, so i will post a link to the files within a couple of days.

Bumping an old post but I'm looking for the same thing. Currently doing research on differentials so any CAD model would help alot. (white papers are also great)

My email: bastijs@bastijs.nl

Thanks,

Did anybody manage to get a model of the Torsen differential in any CAD format?

Would really appreciate it in any format, rmsykes.083429@exchange.sihe.ac.uk

I have a solid in autodesk inventor and autocad formats.

my e-mail is sheets.robert@gmail.com

this solid is only the standard case, no gears.

I am going to add those after finals with splines, but i dont have time to do it until wednesday.

Hey Chris.. i know i can get the cad model off the Z drive, but could you please email me it instead. I'm really lazy and it would be alot easier if you just gave it to me. Thanks sport!

I know we already have the new Differential drawn up in Pro/E but if you could get me the Torsion T1 in IGES format that would be great. There would be 5$ in it for you. I think that is where everyone else went wrong, put a little money on the table and I will get my virtual diff in no time!

Or... someone could just send it to the gmail account and we could have ended this thread on the last page... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

i can appreciate sharing knowledge, but there is a lot to learn from modeling things yourself. try it, i dare you. no, i double dog dare you.

does that cad model come with a TPS report?

We actually assigned new guys a homework part to model. If they are worth something and want to do something we give them something to model since it's a great way to learn software packages and how to design manufacturable components.
Also it shows us which new guys are interested in working and who is worth a damn.

While I agree that everyone should model things for themselves, I also think we should get a library of parts and put to rest all these really old threads that keep popping up.

The kicker of a library of parts from places unknown means that you take a risk with design quality, plus file formatting tends to be a nighmare with any solid modeler.

If nothing else, we could post PDF's, dwg's, or dxf's to make sure we get the right dimensions without having to search all oer creation to find all the parts needed for a formula car...

Kyle Walther
12-13-2006, 11:31 AM
I really think that the library should be used for drawings only. Since most of the drawings are made from manufactures, and not by teams. And by using the drawings you are not really missing out on any acquired knowledge other than "how to search for drawings on the internet".

@ Chris Allbee:

Hi there how are you? I trust you're well. I am new to the FSAE forum AND the design of the vehicle. I recently had a project that required a group of teams to design a drivetrain for a FSAE Race car using a CBR 600RR engine. Problem is, we had to model the drivetrain but have no CAD model for SolidWorks 2009 if the differential. Your post dated 26 September 2003, says that you have a *.prt file for the Torsen Uinversity Special. Could you email it to me and will it work in SolidWorks? Regards and I'd appreciate your help.

Wow. You just essentially said:

"Seven years ago you had a part file. Do you still have it?"

Am I the only one that finds that ludicrous? Though strangely I actually expect Chris to still have it. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
