View Full Version : Cost Analysis - Engine Components

Hey,
The rules state that for costing the engine, everything needed to make the engine run should be included in the engine cost ($1.25/cc for high performance engines). However, the rules also say that fuel injectors/rail, coils, and spark plugs should be costed separately. In my opinion, these items are necessary to make the engine run. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
In the past, has your team included items such as these in the cost analysis as separate items, or as part of the engine package? Any other components you think should be included in the cost of the engine?

If they list a component they specifically want to see in the report in the rules, well, they want to see that costed seperately.

We asked about that last year and they were quite explicit on that list - everything there counts and has to be costed, even if some things don't exist or don't need to be costed (e.g., there's an on-board fire supression system part listed but in the rules, you don't have to cost it.)
So, no merging, deleting, moving, etc.
STock engine prices are just for the case - anything coming in and out of it is logically separate, even though yes, you do need fuel lines to run.

so you're saying that even if we don't have a chain or pulley, the chain/pulley component still has to be on the cost report? And there's no component for driveshaft, so it would have to try and fit in somewhere? (chain/pulley?)

We've got a couple items that pop up as zero/not applicable. And a few that we've shoehorned into the outline in the appendix, and/or have a lot more information than others might since we're making the part ourselves. Not the best solution, but it does keep all reports standardized, which is probably good for judging purposes.

What about electronics? We have designed two systems that have ~60 unique parts each (resistors, capacitors, ICs, etc). Do they want a list of each part including supplier and cost? Or just a final cost?
Thanks
Steve

Our electronics section is one of those things that's a few pages of junk, since we have homemade engine control systems.
I believe we've concatenated parts, giving a total price in the BOM, and attached a breakdown on a separate sheet as a reference.
Not only has there been no comment to this in this and the frame (where we do the same thing for tubes) but in the end I think it's inevitable given the 10-page limit on all sections.
