As luck would have it, the day after West there will be an arrive and drive endurance kart race at Cal Speedway! Follow the link above for more info, but here's the basic idea... $600 entry, 6 people per team. The race is 4 hours, and will be run at the kart track just outside the stadium entrance. LeMans style start, and lots of driver changes to keep things interesting. The karts are ok, and the engines are 8hp 270cc Honda four-strokes. If anyone might be interested post here, and PM me with your contact info. It would be cool to get a couple teams together!

Side note: I talked to a friend that is already signed up, and he said the grid might already be full. I'm going to find out more today, so I'll report back and let everyone know what's up.

Ok guys, here's the deal...
Things are starting to fill but there is currently still room for a few teams to register. Cost is $599 per team (up to 6 members per team). There is also an optional 1 Hour morning practice which is offered at an additional $100 per team. This would put the grand total for over 5 hours of racing at $699 per team.
If you are interested in getting you or a group confirmed for the event, contact me with a PM immediately!!! If you're by yourself, or just have a few people, I can match people up and submit the entry form for that group. Otherwise, if you have enough people to fill out a team, I can just email you the form and you can submit it yourself. As a reminder, this pricing is our 'pre-registration' pricing and is set to increase for all registrations not received by Monday.
Please let me know if you have any questions! It would be awesome to get a bunch of people together for the race! Remember, this is on Sunday, so it won't interfere with comp!

I'm in. Would be fun to get a couple teams involved and have a second endurance race.

I talked to the organizer again today, and he said there are about 5 more team spots open at this point. If we get enough teams together, they would bring out the second set of karts they have (ie the faster ones with the BIGGER engines), and they'd run a sports car race sort of thing where everyone runs at the same time. So far I've got one team filled up... who else wants in?!

That's a pretty lame deal in my opinion. WAY overpriced for 8hp karts. You sure you have that figure correct?

Hey, it may not be for everyone. Yes, the number is correct.
If you look at the local options for arrive-and -drive karting (K1 is the closest example), you're getting a far better experience for the same or less money. K1, which is just a few miles from the track, has heavy, slow electric karts on a super tight and super short track. You only get 10 minute "races" (which cost ~$20 each), and you have to wait 15 minutes in between each one. This race is on an actual track (with room to pass), in actual karts, against a big group of people that are actually good at karting. Plus, you get to race with a team, which is always fun. Say what you will, but the enduro is going to be fun no matter how you slice it!
I don't know any racers that would pass up an opportunity to simply race. In my mind, just because it's not going to rock your world on acceleration doesn't mean it's not a fun challenge. Some of the toughest (and most fun) racing is momentum racing where the machines are somewhat evenly matched, and your skill is what actually matters. This track is wide enough that you *will* be able to take different lines and dice things up. Try doing that at some lame indoor track.
You're welcome to come out and show us how good you are though. We won't think any less of you for it. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My dilema is the cost.
I agree, about K1, as I went there last year. It was an overall horrible track setup and the karts bounced when cornering, but I doubt they are slower than an 8hp karts (with 250cc engines? HEAVY!).
Here in AZ we have an awesome karting place (F1 Race Factory). Has 10hp karts, very competitive on full track layout days, and it'll only cost you $85 for an entire day of unlimited races (in a 9 hour day).
You can see why I would feel the way I do.

With regard to quickness, the K1 karts are like 400 or 500 lbs. They also have differentials, so they don't really handle like karts 'should' (IMHO).
I'm only assuming it is the 8hp Honda engine. They may have another version of tune that's 10hp... I don't know. Either way, being on a track that you can stretch out the engine's legs is way more fun that indoor anything.
If you can make a $85/day unlimited racing kart track work in California, then you should. I'd go there all the time, and I know a lot of other people that would as well. Unless you *really* went into the middle of nowhere, the cost of the land would kill the profit equation for the business. If you're interested, I can PM you with the organizer's email address, and you can haggle with him from there. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm still taking all comers! I've got one team "full" and registered, but we can always add more people and teams. I'd love to get 3+ teams going because once we hit three, the hour practice session is free for all of those teams (normally $100 each). If you know of anyone else that might be interested, let me know asap! I'll be out in Fontucky tomorrow and Saturday. PM me if you're interested, and we can figure out how/when to meet up.

Team "Hodge Podge" started a stunning 14th out of 17 teams... however with a good race pace and disciplined pit stops we worked our way up to 5th place before the halfway point. However a stripped drive belt forced a lengthy pit stop for repairs and ruined any chance of a good finish. Why the karts have belts over chains is beyond the engineers of Hodge Podge Racing. On the otherside the team set consistent lap times and had a fastest lap time competitive with the fastest teams. In the fun/preparation and results/preparations categories HPR came out on top.
