Hey guys-

We're having trouble getting the stock ignition coils to work: we 're running the f4i with a motec m4.

I've read this thread:

http://fsae.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/125607348/m/40210801...10901131#78310901131 (http://fsae.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/125607348/m/40210801131?r=78310901131#78310901131)

and am wondering if we need to get the 4 channel bosch ignitor 0227 100 211
.

Any ideas or suggestions?

We had the same problem 2 years ago, and we ended up getting the Bosch ignitor, which solved our problem.

Do Bosch make a two channel ignitor?
We were running coil on plug, wasted spark, off a two channel M&W CDI box.
You'll still be able to use a four channel box, just use two of the outputs.

I think you'll find you'll need to run wasted spark off a M4 or you run out of outputs.

The MoTec ECUs only have logic level ignition outputs, ie unable to supply enough current to charge the coils. The Bosch Ignition modules are also current limited (10amps?), so should only run one coil per output. So you need one ignition module channel per coil, with each ECU output operating two ignition module channels. Bosch make one, two, three and four channel modules. I believe the M&W boxes are the same as far as current limiting, I know that is the case with inductive setups, not certain about the CDI boxes. I am assuming you currently have the coils wired directly to the ECU ignition outputs?

Of course, you could always look at using our VXI-440 Programmable Ignition Module.

Thanks for the replies guys, and nice push Vimx- I've seen some of your other posts. I'll consider your module.

So pretty much the consensus is that the bosch ignitor will work, but I need one ignitor per coil?

Even with the four channel?

Thanks again for the posts

C'mon now, are you serious? How would you even wire up QTY (4) four channel ignitors to four coils?

Granted, if you tried to wire up your coils directly that means you didn't even bother to read the MoTec manual. But if after all this advice you are still this confused, you need to take a break from asking questions and start just having a good think of things.

Thanks for being a d bag garlic. I'm glad your response was so helpful.

I misread "So you need one ignition module channel per coil, with each ECU output operating two ignition module channels." as one module per coil, which did not make sense. Note the confusion 'Even with the four channel'. Sorry, I still have trouble reading.

Thanks for the responses guys, and garlic, stop sniffing your own farts. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yep, Bosch 4 channel ignitor works great for us. Vim-X may be a good deal if they would supply it to you in return for a sponsorship.

Ian-

I'm looking at the motec pdf file:

http://www.motec.com.au/drawings/m12.pdf

and am wondering about the coil to distributor buisness. I sent it to our electrical guy, but how did you guys wire it? I'm retarded in general, but especially right now.

Disregard last post. I figured it out.

Hey, we're looking to use the Bosch Ign Module (the 211) with our R6. We've been given the impression by Bosch that we'll need to replace the stock coils with a coil pack or some non-transistorized coils. From the look for this thread however that would not seem to be the case.

If any of you guys are still around after all this time, or someone else knows will the Bosch IM4 work directly wired to stock R6 ('07) coils?

The stock 2007 R6 coils are inductive and should be able to be driven with an inductive igniter. We drive these all the time directly from our PE3 ECU which has 4 built in coil igniters.

The older R6 engines (late 90's early 2000's) are CDI and can not be driven effectively with inductive igniters.

we run the IM4 with the stock (or denso) coils on our 06-07 Rr. Works great!
