Has anyone had experience with making their own half shafts? I realize that there are companies that make complete units and what not but I have opted to make my own for fun :P

Im trying to figure out how much the diameter of the shaft will change when i heat treat it to 44-46RC. Im coming up with 2.9 thousandths of an inch. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It seems a little much to me.

Thanks, Dan

That´s far less than the free play between your tripod/CV and your shaft spline.

if your shafts are plunged and the tripods aren´t press fit, for what thermal issue are you wondering off?.

We did HS on the past, problems with mill cut splines (and not proper made ones via plastic deformation), wrong hardness distribution (core vs surface) and some finish issues leading to cracks enforced us to buy Taylor´s last year JUST before michigan!!! (our custom shafts broke at may 08!).

We are very impressed with the taylors, very well made parts and 10/10 customer support.
