Hey guys,

I'm currently a Master's student here at ASU, and I'm exploring doing a Master's thesis/project for the FSAE car here (probably engine). One of the ideas brought up was to modify our current F4i engine to produce a stratified charge.

I was wondering if anyone else has done a Master's/senior thesis or project for FSAE (I've read a few papers from U of Toronto and Vanderbilt, mostly pertaining to intake and cooling). If you have other suggestions for a topic/project that is feasible and realistic for a Master's thesis/project too, that'd be great too. I'm just trying to get a gauge of what others in the past have done.

Thanks.

Oregon state has several projects that were Master Thesis projects, Cornell has done some stuff in the past, there is a guy I know doing a project on snowmobile engines and efficiency focuses. It really is something so expansive that projects are very abundant. I'm currently working on a vehicle dynamics focused undergrad thesis, so, just to throw another one out there.

I think a lot of Australian papers have been focused on aerodynamics and I've seen a couple out there on lap time simulations.

Seeing that you registered back in 2005, then you may or may not have seen a lot of things come through this competition.

I'm not sure if it was a Master's thesis or not, but someone from Auckland wrote about using carbon fiber as a crankcase material.

I direct you here for a good example:

Some recent OSU SAE grad thesis examples:

"Aerodynamic Undertray Design for Formula SAE," Karl Jensen, 2010
"Global Distributed Design and Manufacturing of a Formula SAE Race Car," Trenton Carpenter, 2011
"Supply Chain Management Tools and Processes in a Global Distributed Student Team," Matthias Woelfl, 2012
"Development of Vehicle Dynamics Tools for Motorsports," Chris Patton, 2013

and some recent honors thesis examples (these are nearly the level of an MS thesis):

"OSU FormulaSAE: Team Management Structure," Hillary Shoop, 2010
"Temporary Organizations: Competition Management for Global Formula Racing," Michael Warmack, 2010
"Inventory Management System for the Global Formula Racing Team," Kimberly Daeschel, 2012

You'll notice a lot of emphasis on organizational design, this is a critical area for GFR.

We're working to get at least some of this work published in the open literature. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Wow Dr. Paasch, thanks for those suggestions! Is it possible for you to share/post links to those papers? Team management here is a major area for renovation at ASU.

Thanks.
