How much is necessary to be a volume of paint ball air tank for pneumatic shifting?

As a fan of paintball and enthusiast, have you also taken into account what gas is stored inside that tank? Certain styles of tanks are available to put various gases in them, 3 of the which that are most popular (and pretty much the only commercially available) are CO2, N2, and HPA (High Pressure Air). The CO2 tanks are not available in the high pressure ranges above 3,000 psi (~200 bar). The 300 bar (~4500psi) tanks do exist and are only available for N2 and HPA. CO2 isn't as stable when being used for stuff like high compression to atmospheric conditions. HPA and N2 are almost indistinguishable other than the vapor that may form from HPA (maybe that's a concern in this application? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

To also back up what your answers are, the commercially available tanks for HPA generally range from 48 in^3 to 90 in^3 which is roughly ~.75 - ~1.5L.


Now, the only thing I see is that that is still a large range you've noted...

Let's narrow that down? What is the volume of the pneumatic air ram (actuator) that you've selected? While going through this we can also assume the power loss in the system due to leaks/inefficiencies etc for a partial safety factor. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Our experience is that pneumatic systems leak like a sieve, so for sizing, I'd say three times what you'd expect to use.
