The process is fairly simple. The steering wheel frames are aluminum. The spokes are cut out of flat aluminum plate on a CNC machine and then anodized black. Aluminum tubing is formed into a circle to create the rim and welded to the spokes. It is then covered with a high density foam rubber that is custom molded to the shape of the specific steering wheel. Then genuine suede leather is cut to size and hand stitched over the rubber covered rim. This is the tricky part and it takes an expert craftsman to get it right.
Hope that helps you out http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
