Hello everyone,
As you may or may not know, there are a lot of us here at Garrett that are involved with the planning on this year's FSAE West competition. Our motorsports group has been asked to make a short presentation (probably on Friday at comp) about our motorsports operations and technology. We wanted to find out what you guys want to hear about, rather than just bring some boring presentation. So, consider this an official invitation to ask for certain topics to be covered.
So everyone is on the same page, our motorsports group does design and applications engineering for many of the cars running in LeMans, ALMS, WRC, and Paris-Dakar... as well as the entire Champ Car field. The new Audi R10, which won this year at Sebring in its first race ever, is equipped with our turbos. Feel free to ask about anything... we may not be able to give you some information (for proprietary reasons), but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Sounds awesome, Kirk.
From the perspective of Garrett as a supplier, I'd probably like to hear about your products, and integration/support services offered to clients/SAE teams.
From the perspective of a graduating engineering student, I'd like to hear about what your hiring practices are, positions available, work environment, type of work/projects I could work on, desireable skills, travel, etc.
And as a motorsports nut, I'd like to hear anythign and everything about the kind of projects you mentioned, Champ Car, LeMans, ALMS, WRC. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe not entirely realistic, but if you did something along the lines of Turbos 101 (maybe 201) I imagine it would be pretty popular.
VERY glad to hear you guys are going to be involved like this...just plain cool.
Wollongong is very interested

The whole reason we're asking the question is so you guys can request specific topics, or even specific questions. Apparently we only have about 15-30 minutes to do this, so we'd like to focus on exactly on what you guys want to hear, and possibly answer some of your questions during the presentation. I can see us talking about turbos for hours on end, but this needs to be relatively condensed. What is Wollongong interested in hearing about? Travis, anything specific in a Turbo 101/201 that you want to hear about? Anyone else want to jump in?

I didn't realize you meant SHORT....if it's only going to be 15 minutes, I'd be more interested in how you all approach a project. Someone says I want a turbo _______...then what? That sort of thing. Any R10 info would be damn cool as well http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'd like to see turbo's downstream of a restrictor. Maybe some demonstrations with a clear venturi and colored gas to see flow differences versus NA. just my quick thought

maybe point out the difficulties in developping seals for turbos with throttle body pre-compressor. mention the rules for other racing venues, and what the solutions are to both the current rules set in fsae, and potential solutions for changing the rules for post compressor throttle.

I'd be interested in current topics in impeller and turbine wheel design, w.r.t. fluid dynamics (and analysis), materials engineering and stress analysis.

what about east comp?

No dice. We're not sending anyone out there this year (that I know of). Last year I was out there on unpaid vacation time. With FSAE West only about 60 miles away we can't justify taking the time to go to FSAE East. That may change next year, but don't hold your breath.

Hello Everyone,
Sorry to disappoint, but I won't be able to give the motorsports presentation as originally planned at FSAE West. However, I will be assuming the role of practice track captain at the event, so you are welcome to stop by and talk shop.
Good luck to all teams next week,
