Thread: Mc Pherson---Suspension

    hey,

    i have just one question
Why doesn't anybody drive with a Mc Pherson suspension strut?

If you would do that, you don't need Linkages and rods

    Thanks a lot

Mc'strut suspensions have poor camber gain and also suffer from the phenomenon of gaining positive camber when steered dynamically, depending on how much SAI they have.

The benefit of Mc'struts is that they have very good packaging... this is why you see them at the front ends of many awd cars that have an ultra cramped engine bay. One other possible benefit (I'm not 100% on this at all) is that the lateral contact patch movement through travel is lower than with SLA. My thinking is that this is better for low traction, bumpy surfaces... think WRC.

One other drawback to mc-strut is that during high lateral accelerations there is a massive bending force going into the strut, this forces the integral damper's piston into the walls, creating friction. That force is something you would be much happier to have at your contact patch... not wearing your damper seals. You might notice that tarmac wrc cars with mcstrut have HUGE (60/70mm) struts for this reason.
