Following article has been posted online the offical Formula SAE Michigan News Page Formula SAE Michigan will have Waitlist for 2012!:

Attention Formula SAE Teams, SAE has decided to instill a waitlist for the 2012 Formula SAE Michigan Competition. Being new for 2012, SAE International Collegiate Design Staff are treating this as a pilot.

    How The Waitlist Works?
When the Formula SAE Michigan competition has reached its maximum team limit of 120 teams, there will be 20 waitlisted spots available for teams. The waitlist will remain open until all 20 spots are filled or registration deadline of December 19th is reached.

If you are in the process of registering your team when the event sells out, you will be informed that registration is closed and asked if you would like to be added to the waitlist. Response is required; teams will not automatically be added to the waitlist.

Teams that accept the offer will continue through the standard online registration process; however the registration fee will not be charged to their credit card at that time.

Teams registered on the waitlist will be sequentially assigned a vehicle number starting with the next number after the last team on the “Registered Teams” list. That number will then be the cars number when and if the team moves to the “Registered Teams” list.

As registered teams notify us that they are withdrawing from the competition, we will contact the waitlisted teams in the sequential order and give them the option to register. Once a team passes on the opportunity they will be removed from the list. Once a team accepts the opportunity they will be moved to the Registered Teams list.

    Things To Remember:
    1. NO GUARANTEE.
Please be advised that if your team chooses to build; you accept full responsibility that you are building at your own risk. There is no assurance your team will be pulled from the waitlist onto the “Registered Teams” list to compete in 2012.

    2. REGISTRATIONS NON-TRANSFERRABLE
If you add your team to FSAE Michigan’s waitlist and register for FSAE Lincoln; registration fees WILL NOT be transferable. If your team has the option to become active on the registered team list for Michigan you will be required to pay a second registration fee. We will not transfer teams between competitions.

    3. DEADLINES AND REPORTS
    a. PRIOR TO DEADLINES.
If your team receives a position on the “Registered Teams” list before the submission deadlines for design reports, cost reports, and other materials you are required to submit the document by the due date. Once you become active onto the “Registered Teams” list you will be given access online the website for submission.

    b. AFTER DEADLINES.
If your team receives a position on the “Registered Teams” list after the submission deadlines for design reports, cost reports, and other materials you are required to submit the document within 24 hours of being put onto the competition team list. So while you are choosing to build your vehicle, you should also be working on all required submissions.

    4. WITHDRAWAL NOTIFICATION
Should your team decide to withdrawal OR be taken off the waitlist for the Michigan competition please notify SAE at collegiatecompetitions@sae.org.

Or email Kaley Zundel at kzundel@sae.org or call 724-7725-8533.

Non-Refundable Registration Fees Policy still applies to teams withdrawing from active Registered Team List.

Very cool. A question, though - If a team is on the waitlist for Michigan, are they able to register for Lincoln before the month is up? Or would the 30 day rule still apply.

    Thanks

Yes you can waitlist for Michigan and still register the same day for Lincoln. The 30 day rule will not apply if you are on the waitlist.

The 30 day rule will only stop those teams who successfully register from registering for another event.

If we get on the waitlist for Michigan and register for Lincoln but then get onto the "registered teams" list for Michigan will we be able to transfer from the Lincoln comp? Or how will that work?

It looks like you will have to pay again to register for Michigan. Seems kinda unfair if you ask me, but I'm sure there's some bureacratic/ management reason for this. Maybe just how the current payment system works and SAE has no control over it? Who knows.

Not really, since you may then take part in both events. Why not pay for both? (Assuming that you want to take part in both. Of course if not, then the money for the registration of one event is lost)
From experience I can tell that managing teams dropping out and getting in from the waiting list is not as easy as it seems. You have to re-arrange judging queues, change the program magazine and the pit signs etc.
That means that every change in the registered teams list really causes a lot of work.

Sorry to disappoint but the reason is not bureaucratic or due to current payment process we have no control, it is simply because we cannot purposely reduce the size of one competition for the other; especially when there is no waitlist operational for Lincoln.

We organize two competitions every year that teams can register for; if one (Michigan) sells out and it’s your team’s choice then as a team you have a hard decision to make 1) register Michigan waitlist only OR 2) register Michigan waitlist and Lincoln with number 2 having the possibility of competing at both competitions…it’s called Project Management.

Is it possible for each time to find out where they are at in the waiting list and what their numbers are?
