Perhaps Steve was just disappointed that there was no pics of the main engine, only the backup. Here you go Steve, feeling more balanced now?
I think the important thing here is that Willy can blow up any engine, stock or modified.

Yeah, i got it on my car.
Farls, who ever you are. I might have to take you off the Christmas card list. After doing fsae for 5 years, the most important thing I have learnt to achieve a good result is to build a car early and test, a few kg here or there in the scheme of things doesn't really matter.
Farls, get things right. Now putting the prototype engine into a new car a week before the 2003 event and going testing without water or oil pressure gauges is a recipe for disaster. Here are some pics from the first testing session last year.
Conrods before, plenty of spares, bullet proof
Conrods 1 minute later after driving in circles in our first testing session 2003, 7 days before the 2003 event
Piston pics you posted above are the ones we ran on Sunday, in the first enduro at the 2003 event. They were patched with silastic, (only the best loctite could supply, the high temperature stuff). Second quickest lap, who needed all the extra mass anyway
Farls, at least the Wattard ran in 2003, your backup engine, the FARLARD only ran for 2 minutes before the flywheel came off. The reason for the ER5 failure was we used the baffling you and Soups made, this was our primary mistake. Next time yau attempt to work on an engine, just remember, when you use the uni torque wrench, it actually reads in multiples of ten, so 9 is actaully 90Nm. Just remember this point when torquing up M6 bolts, we wouldn't want you to shear any more.
FARLARD RIP
Farls, maybe you should stick to integration, just remember, no interference fits allowed.
You might want to check your porsche rear number plates, your plates are up for ransom
On a serious note, this is where we were a few days ago.
If any past members or second squad guys have any time, come past the thermo lab or let me know. If Melb Uni can help any other teams leading up to the comp, let me know. Getting a car to the event is an achievement in itself from my past experiences.
The WATTARD looks good this year, no failures in 2004 except for 1 dyno seisure, 1.4 bar boost, zero oil consumption through the GT12 turbo without carbon seals, a car to put it in and test would top off my five year stint in this comp. See you at the comp

agreed. and not to mention, without a backup.

c'mon we know we're good, but it was only 7th fastest (counting only the best lap from each uni too, and only the first heat of the enduro of course).

it only arrived a week before the competition because the team as a whole was so ill prepared. maybe if it arrived 2 weeks before the competition we could have got it to run for 4 minutes.

hey, i helped make them too! but jokes aside, time constraints resulted in us never finishing them. if they were put into the engine in the state we left em last year i'm not suprised the er5 grenaded as it did.
Like Elvis said... "A little less talk, a little more action."
Perhaps spending half an hour posting up a whole bunch of photos and text, and stealing Farls' number plates, could have been put to better use actually building the car?
