Along with the University of Texas San Antonio, the University of Florida is in need of a few sprockets. We know about the group buy deal from sproket specialists, but we currently need homes for two or three more of the cute lil fellers. If we cannot find enough buyers, we are also interested in purchasing any left over sprokects from previous group buys, if anyone has some extras. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered 428 sprockets & chain? A 12T 520 sprocket would be the same diameter as a 15T 428 sprocket.

Have you done such a conversion? does the 428 chain hold up very well? Was it a DID, RK, Regina, or another brand? Did you harden and surface harden after you welded it, or were you able to cut your own splines into it? Any more info would be appreciated. If anyone can help with the 12t 520, that would be great too. Thanks in advance.

If you call Sprocket Specialist, they may have some 12T 520 sprockets in stock. I bought one from them for $30 2 months ago.

No, I have not done a 428 conversion. The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and Milwaukee (I think) used 428 chains and sprockets. UTA was praised for it by one of the design judges. I calculated the safety factor for our application, and we may try a 428 chain this year.

UTA purchased (6) 428 sprockets from Sprocket Specialist since they were custom sprockets, and I think Milwaukee had a machine shop machine their sprocket. I am not certain what brands or types of chains they used.

I would never weld the sprocket. Instead, I would try to purchase a sprocket from UTA or buy a 16T 525 Sprocket Specialist sprocket and have a sponsor of our's cut new teeth. This means the spline is already cut by S.S. We would end up with a 425 sprocket, which I think is close enough to 428.

Hey, I'm member of Universidad Simon Bolivar team at Venezuela. We are looking forward to buy 2 12t sprockets, 520 pitch for CBR600F4/F4i at sprocket specialists. The guy told me that we could make a special order of at least 8. Who is interested???? I need 6 more... eric_fsae@yahoo.com

If you try to order a 12 tooth sprocket for an F4i or R6 from SS they will tell you it is special order. After many emails I found that you can order a 12 tooth 520 flat sprocket off the shelf for either $18 or $28. They just don't make any with shoulders for specific bikes.

Earlier I posted that we might use a 428 chain. We actually did decide to use the DID 428 Heavy Duty non-o-ring chain, and we have it currently installed. We have about 4 hours of driving on the car, and the chain has already seemed to stretch slightly. However, I remember our former RK 520 chain stretching quite a bit, too.

As far as sprockets, we did not have to weld either of them. The 65T aluminum rear was custom made by Sprocket Specialists. The 14T countershaft sprocket began as a 17T 525 (same width as 428) F4i sprocket from Sprocket Specialists. Then a local gear and spline shop cut new teeth into it for us and hardened it.
