Thread: Shoulder Harness Bars & Impact Attenuators

    A note to all teams for FSAE (Michigan), FSAE West (and the competitions in the UK, Germany, Italy and Australia).

    At FSAE VIR and again at Formula Hybrid earlier this week, a significant number of teams were required to reinforce their shoulder harness bar/tube because they had not read the 2008 Rules. Their cars had tubes with 0.065" wall thickness (built to the 2007 Rules). For 2008 the tube to which the shoulder harness is mounted MUST be a minimum of 1.00" OD x 0.095" wall steel or approved equivalent.

    There is no excuse for teams to have missed this item because it was among those listed in the summary of major 2008 changes that was published on the official FSAE web site back on June 1st 2007 at:

    We will be checking the wall thickness with the ultrasonic tester.

    Another item has also come to light. From reading and grading the Impact Attenuator Reports, it appears that some teams have forgotten that for 2008, the Impact Attenuator must be at least 200 mm (7.8 ins) long. This is an increase from the 150 mm (5.9 ins) of prior years.
