Thread: 2003 Australasia Competition

  1. #1
I know there was a thread about the Aussie comp but it is old, and I think it was in the incorrect forum anyway.

Who has already registered for the Competition in December? We have although we are still looking hard for ways to get the job done cheap enough.

Our transport isn't finalized yet. I was hoping other teams would speak up, I know of a few planning on going but none confirmed. Probably too early.

Sorry to say, we've decided not to come to Oz this year. We can't spare the money and the people that time of year (final exams and manufacturing deadlines for the '04 car).

Watch out for the dropbears... that still cracks me up.

Yep, there's a thread on this on the General Discussion Forum, but I'm sure you guys are all aware of that. Besides, it seemed some no-hoper Aussies hijacked the thread, and started spreading tall stories about killer wildlife...

We are all really keen over here to get some more US teams to our comp, so it is great to hear of your interest. If we can help out in any way let us know. I imagine that most of you would be shipping direct to Adelaide(?) this year, but if you are coming to Melbourne first let us know and we can try to help out with accomodation / storage / road transport etc.

I notice that Charlie said that it was probably too early to start planning stuff. If you want to come over here I'd suggest lodging all the forms as I believe registration closes in a few weeks.

The event itself is being held in Tailem Bend, about an hour out of Adelaide. The site is quite remote, so you'll need to be well prepared with spares, provisions etc. Be prepared for hot weather. Average temp at that time of year is in the low to mid 30's (Celsius scale) - I don't know how that relates to Fahrenheit, but I think it is somewhere up in the 90's (?). We've all been to the site inspection they had a couple of months back, so if you want any advice on the site itself just ask. For my 3.4 cents worth, the track surface seemed pretty free of bumps, although there were a few changes of surface which may be encountered in the Autocross and Endurance events. I personally didn't measure roughness or anything, but it looks like standard Aussie tarmac / asphalt or whatever you call it. The site is actually an old drag strip, with add-ons when Mitsubishi concverted it into a proving ground.

Come over if you can, it is a fun comp and it's all pretty low-key. We understand it is a big expense, and that is the exact reason that we haven't made it to the US or UK. But the more the merrier as far as we are concerned!

Gotta go. A giant red roo has just broken into the back yard and is trying to kick the dunny down....

Gawd Geoff, I'm glad that flesh eating emu chased that boomer away and saved your dunny, that could have been a crap situation
Seriously, we have expressions of interest from the following US teams.
    Kettering (possible)
    RIT (probable)
    UTA (probable)
    Illinois Urbana Champaigne (Possible)
    Cal Poly (maybe)
    Auburn (probable)
    Georgia Tech (probable)

Seeing as GaTech and Auburn are in the same general area, maybe they should be talking about cooperative shipping? UTA is not that far away either.
We also have expressions of interest from Asia and Europe. Maybe Delft can bring the lightweight device down here and show us how its done? Chalmers (Sweden) second in Design in the UK have expressed an interest.
One word of warning for Northern Hemisphere visitors, the Coriolis Effect makes the left right transitions different to what you might expect (Especially when you swerve to miss that falling bear) But dont worry, the winged warrior from Monash will swoop in and save you.

You can put a yes by our name Pat, nothing is going to stop us from getting there in December.

Yes, I am talking with GT and I hope we can help each other out quite a bit. I am just curious how other team's situations are stacking up, and who is relaly able to go.

    I know I'm being impatient, I just can't wait.
