Question for UVic

on your 99 car from 2002, what were you doing with your sidepods? I found one picture on your website that I could see pavement through the (driver's) left pod, never seen a better view of the right one. Those seem to be the design that we may try this year, as historically our team hasn't done too much body design/work...
How did those work for you? I see that this past year you changed to the low, more forward mounted pods that so many teams run, is there a reason for that that isn't top secret?

Oops, missed this post for quite some time.

The UV02 (car 99) pods weren't really fuctional, and were a last minute addition. In fact, we had to nix them in order to have a bigger radiator during our summer testing. I really don't think they were worth while, but we felt we needed them to make it a race car.



On UV03 (2003) the pods were functional and a whole lot nicer IMHO.

What program are you using for your flow analysis Richard, if you don't mind me asking?

That particular program was flowworks, a solidworks plugin. Its quite intuitive and very fast in the world of CFD. That particular image and test was done for more of a sponsor/department eye candy shot, than to gather any meaningful data.

Thanks for replying Richard We've got our preliminary cooling design wrapped up, and looks like there's a good chance we'll be doing the conventional sidepods (woohoo, I get to do bodywork!).
At HPV competition last year, I saw lots of people using FLUENT for their aerodynamics, but we looked into that, and that $2450 price tag for an academic seat is just a little too spendy. We've got Algor, but few people really know how to run it. Will have to look into flowworks.

In my limited experience, it is definately worth the time and effort to learn Algor, as its a very good program and pretty easy to use too.
