Powertrain Engineering Intern opportunity within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles - Detroit

    Please apply via: https://www.fcagroupcareers.com/job/...rn-detroit-mi/

This role will likely be working in our manual transmissions group within powertrain.

    Job Description

FCA US LLC College Intern Program offers a unique opportunity for highly motivated, innovative, and inspired individuals to work in a challenging assignment where contribution, teamwork, and communication are vital to the success of the organization. As a leading-edge company, we can provide real world challenges and rewarding intern experiences to candidates from a variety of colleges and universities while providing a competitive salary.

Interns are assigned to an organization department based on the candidate's background, skill set and interests. The assignments are project-oriented, meaningful to the department and allow the intern to take responsibility for a major task. Interns experience a sense of personal accomplishment and contribution, and experience the corporate business culture through work assignments and structured activities. They gain the communication and etiquette skills required in business while sharing knowledge gained from recent courses. They also enhance their computer skills and learn new systems and software.

Each intern assignment consists of challenging projects with specific goals, providing opportunities for personal growth and development. Interns that demonstrate outstanding qualities may be invited back the following year for a second internship or to interview for full-time positions in our various new hire programs.
Summer internships are primarily located at the FCA US Headquarters and Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan, other facilities in the Detroit Metropolitan area, and Business Centers located throughout the country. Interns may qualify for a housing allowance and/or travel assistance. During the internship, interns will have the opportunity to participate in many activities designed specifically to enhance their knowledge of FCA, our products and the metro Detroit area.

The Powertrain Engineering Intern assignments include:

Learn the process of summarizing results for hybrid-electric battery-pack-cell reference (RPT), develop tools (using Excel) to semi-automate the RPT data summarizing process and summarize the RPT data from proposed battery-pack cells under test
Develop a roadmap of automotive power electronics, inverters, simulation, and on-board charger technology by performing research to understand the framework of an optimization technique and its variant - genetic algorithm
Using a Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II), implement an algorithm to solve a multi-objective optimization problem in MATLAB
Investigate valvetrain noise in engines by creating a virtual analysis tool to quantify the amount of energy that is converted to noise within the valvetrain, determine code effectiveness and implement routines into the cam design software
Review fault matrices to understand what faults cause a transfer-case to default to two-wheel-drive and how the logic could be changed to maintain transfer-case functionality
Acquire hardware and develop a procedure to perform HIL testing on proposed transfer-case software changes
Integrate and test new mass-air-flow sensor technology and develop combustion analysis documentation for a single-cylinder engine assembly
Develop a generic, parallel optimization tool in MATLAB/Simulink to be used with GT-Power to solve single/multi objectives of engine performance for both steady-state and transient conditions
Perform powertrain analysis using CAE methods to confirm or recommend design changes to improve driveline axle durability using a damage assessment study
Use and modify Simulink Virtual Powertrain endurance cycle simulation tools to determine relative life of various RAM truck axle configurations
Determine the low RPM transient benefits of adding a continuous variable transmission using GT Power simulation tools

    Position Requirements

    Basic Qualifications:

Pursuing a major in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Software Engineering or a related field
Completion of sophomore year at an accredited university by summer of 2018

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Strong interest in automotive industry
Strong written and oral communication skills
    Good interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a team environment
