Thread: Roll Bar Padding 2009

  1. #1
SAE has just posted a notice on the official Formula SAE web site from Michael Royce about roll bar padding and head restraints.

The old foam roll bar padding is out! Everyone needs the SFI or FIA specification stuff.

One source of SFI padding that fits 1 inch OD tubing is BSCI in Mooresville, NC. I understand that they are willing to give FSAE teams a special price. The contact at BSCI is:
    Matt Ray
    sales@rollbarpadding.com
    or via fax to:
    Fax: 704-660-1540

He may be a little busy over the next few days getting the NASCAR teams supplied for Daytona.

BSCI also sells sheet foam to SFI 45.2 spec which is designed for head restraints.

    Their web site is:

In 2003 we showed up with SFI roll bar padding, the tech inspector told us it wasn't good padding, it was too hard, and made us replace it with the soft kiddie stuff.

So I find this a bit amusing.

(We did end up running it after a fuss and we had to go find the SFI spec and explain to the tech guys that it was actually harder because it absorbs energy).

BSCI offer only a thickness of 3/4" for 1" tubing...

The rule says that the minimum thickness allowed is 1/2" so that's the size I want. Do you guys knowm any other brand than BSCI??
