Pretty crippling deadband they've got there
Not a fan of rulebook divergence. I don't think student teams should not have to worry about homologating their vehicle for every competition's unique rules. Rules committee should get it together...
sounds like tech should be using a FARO arm to check for wing compliance
Well said.
I just read on the Monash FB page that they went into design judging before weigh-in? Isn't this frowned upon? Vehicle weight is critical for the judges. Was this just a typo?
Caught a glimpse of that Delft skidpad run on the livestream. Unreal.
Congrats to SJSU. Well done.
Any suggestions for where to follow this event other than this website?
If judging was based on the eyeballing the build quality of the car, then questioning wouldn’t be necessary. I would hope student designers bring up all of their design considerations during the...
This is only my perspective, but I believe that some of the component/system design and build aspects can be inferred from the first impression of the car as it sits in the design bay. The fit and...
Plenty of documentation is publicly available online explaining the design event and scoring guidelines on the SAE website and FSAEOnline. Not sure how many teams really use those documents to...
Hey Noah, do yourself a favor and get yourself Jorge Segers' book (SAE #R-408)
Isn't transient performance related how quickly the car changes direction? Isn't that just the rate at which the car moves through the different states of the diagram? How would one extract that...
I'd recommend starting with something manageable, like getting a repository of vehicle masses and CG locations together, or getting teams to volunteer sharing their spec sheets.
Anything more is...
Totally agree Bill,
Additionally, looking for interesting or peculiar wear patterns on components can give insight into when to replace or if something is underbuilt. Sensitivities in vehicle...
I thought this was going to be a much-needed discussion about vehicle testing.
Nevermind.
Have you used tire modelling software?
Wow, blast from the past right there....
Agreed Doug, thanks for the ongoing help.
On Z's Christmas list this year: a camera.
My 2c.
If these rules were changed based on feedback from teams similar to a NHTSA New Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) or the FSAE rules committee (see post #2 in an adjacent thread), then no harm...
Tobias et al,
Any news on the design talkback from this year? It hasn't been uploaded yet it seems.
Live stream is great right now for accel. No latency.
Yep, not working here either.
FYI, the livestream is pretty slow here in the US, even on fast connections. The resolution is really high on the video feed so maybe that's contributing to the slow stream (lots of buffering).
So pumped for this!

Thanks as always Tobias.
