Hi Everyone,
Although this thread is old I just wanted to make any FSAE Team aware of the fact that there is a Free Excel Tool available for FSAE Teams to Design and Verify
the base Design...
Dear FSAE Students, it has been several years that I have not posted on this site - due to professional obligations - but now I wanted to share with you
that DYNATUNE-XL just rolled out RELEASE 8.0...
You can of course also consider using a suspension tool in excel. As many FSAE teams do. www.dynatune-xl.com
I agree. But next to putting on my engineering hat - which is always focused on getting to that 90% as best as possible (as can be seen in some of my tools) - there is still the science hat, that...
Bill,
I have asked myself that same question many times. I am equally guilty of using the "simple" formulas and they all work quite well with your indicated range of confidence level. However when I...
Bill, I envy you ! You are a very fortunate man to have worked with Mr. Bundorf and Leffert. I could not agree more with your comments. Compliances need to be considered in any kind of suspension...
Z,
With "modern suspension design" I meant after 1989 when the book that you are still considering to buy came out. Actually the rest of the quote came out of that book (page 141/142, first...
Instead of talking of front and rear tire cornering stiffness, I personally think that it is far more useful to talk about front and rear axle cornering stiffness which includes of course the effects...
Technically speaking the RCH as is being used in modern suspension design is "only" valid at the very beginning of lateral vehicle movement. As Wolfgang Matschinsky quite extensively demonstrated in...

We can be contacted at info@dynatune-xl.com. There is also a link on the home page leading to more info about FSAE Team sponsorship.
DYNATUNE-XL just released its first version of the SUSPENSION TUNING MODULE for MS EXCEL. The tool allows to optimize spring & damper setup in a few easy steps using also hydraulic 4 poster test...
In our FSAE sponsorship package the DUNATUNE SUSPENSION DESIGN MODULE contains the possibility of
1) creating loadcases for the vehicle
2) enter 3D loads at the contact patch and calculate...
I have developed a tool for brake system layout that is quite straight forward and is considering also aerodynamic loads. You might find some additional
info for your calculations by downloading...
Welcome in the world of Automotive Engineering :-). Looks like you still have a lot of work to do defining the car. We at DYNATUNE-XL are seeing an ever growing community
of FSAE Teams using our MS...
Again I am fully agreeing with Tim .. but since there is still a need for some well educated engineering guesses we need some tools.
And the question from "Z" How important is any one compliance ?...
You mean something ugly non-linear like this ? 581
I could not follow completely the "where have you been" reasoning since I think we are fully agreeing that compliance induced steer effects should...
And another paper from Bundorf & Leffert in 1976 was called "The Cornering Compliance Concept for Description of Vehicle Directional Control Properties" but I can equally well live
with deflection...
Since we are talking about Software & Dynamics let me add my 1p.
I have spent a long time of my professional life working with Multi-Body-Analysis Tools (like ADAMS, DADS etc.) an developing cars....
I agree with Tim. Look up tables can be fast, but to be honest one only needs 5 or 6 compliance characteristics to cover the majority of compliance effects. At least that is the experience I have...
Thank you OspreysGoSWOOP for your comments. Anyone can download on the site a demo version of the "Base" Variant of the Suspension Design Module or the Ride & Handling Setup Tool
to play with the...
I can only recommend very strongly to everyone to read the book from Matschinsky. It explains clearly what has been discussed in this forum many times with many different opinions
methods. Actually...
There were pages that took definitely more time than that ......:o
Koushik,
if you really want to understand what happens in a suspension I can only recommend to you the book from Wolfgang Matschinsky:...
