View Full Version : West Cost Practice 2005

Hey Everyone,

The powers that be are thinking of doing another west coast practice event like last year at Buttonwillow.....

If we can pull it together, this year it will be in So Cal @ Irwindale Speedway or Cal Speedway or something equivalent.... in mid April making it 6 or so weeks before the competition.

Structure will be similar to the Buttonwilllow event (i.e. dynamic practice and static judging)

Cost per team should not be more than $100 and it will probably be less (i.e free if things work out well)

Please post replies to let us know who is interested in such an event

Thanks,

Ian

Even if you don't have your team together it would be worth the trip down to see some other cars in person and get a real idea of the scale of the parts and performance capabilities of the cars. Not to mention a lot of good "do's and don'ts" from folks who've been-there-done-that.

Hey Guys,

Although I'm looking forward to the Miliken presentation, it has nothing specifically to do with the practice event in April, so we would appreciate you guys starting a separate thread to track it.....

As for the April event,

A flyer has been put together and should be released shortly if not already.....

Mike Stewart is the head of student activities for So Cal SAE and as such is coordinating the registration (among other things) for the practice.

As for as the event structure, that's my department and thing are looking really good!!!

We will keep you posted as new information comes, but let's keep this thread specific to the April practice.

Thanks

I will be attending the event as an FSAE Alumn. I'll work with wingman and figure out something I can do to help.

NOOOO!!!!!! April 16th is an EIT exam date! Is there anyway we can move this date? I just realized this. I know it seems kind of late, but I'm sure there are other people taking the EIT and would love to go to this event. If there is a way to change it, can we??

Hey everyone,

Just a quick update, it looks like we will have as many as 3 former FSAE judges participating in the practice event, the venue is all set, and all looks to be the makings of a great event

buuuuuuuuut, We are missing one critical item

NO ONE HAS REGISTERED YET!!!!

Omar, in regards to your request, unfortunately it would probably be easier to have the EIT rescheduled than the practice event.... this kind of thing isn't just thrown together on a whim....

You guys please put the word out to other teams that have not heard about this....

We need to have at least 10 teams or it's not worth the judges time to come out to the event.

PLEASE contact Mike Stewart [Michael.Stewart2@Honeywell.com]
and at least let him know you are planning to attend so we can prepare.....
He can also e-mail you a flyer if you have not yet received one!!

We are 6 weeks away from this thing....

Let make it happen!!

Hey everyone,

Just an update on the April 16th practice.

Since quite a few of you probably won't have a car running for various reasons, we are considering letting teams bring an alternate vehicle to run in the autoX so your drivers can at least get some kind of seat time. This vehicle can be an older FSAE car, Kart, passenger car or any SCCA Solo 2 legal vehicle you would like to run INSTEAD OF, not in addition too, your FSAE car. If you do not bring an FSAE car and would still like to present a "paper" car to the judges, let me know and we will try to work something out....

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Other facts:

The event is being held at the same facility as the proposed 2006 west coast event.

Teams that are not competing in this year FSAE event are still welcome to attend the practice if we still have space (15 team limit)

I think we are up to 5 confirmed at this point

Hope to see you all there.

Ian (aka Wingman)

Dave M

I dont have the detailed schedule but, things will start around 9am for a drivers/team meeting. After that teams will be rotating from the skid pad, acceleration (which should be timed), and static judging. After lunch its autocrossing for everybody for an hour and a half, and then endurance runs at the end.

Hey everyone,

The event has not changed...

Saturday the 16th only!! one day

The plan is still to do

tech
design judging
skid pad
accel/braking

in the morning (7am to 12noon) and auto-x practice
sessions (MUCHO LAPS!!!) in the afternoon on Saturday

As for Sunday, that is a so cal regional autoX
championship (3 timed laps for $35) So, if you want to
stay for that(and enter if you wish) you are welcome
to do so, but it has nothing to do with FSAE...

You will be receiving detailed team schedules for the morning middle of this week...

registration opens at 7 am and judging starts at 8 so be on time!!

Also, remember to plan for members of your team (2-3 at any given time if possible) available to act as corner workers throughout the day....

Can't wait to see all of you there!!

Cheers,

Ian

Damn. That kicked ass.
Props to Pomona for putting on a hell of a show. The whole thing was really well run, and we had a great time. The autocross was sweeeet, and seeing FSAE cars in action for the first time blew my mind. I didn't think it was possible, but I'm even more motivated to build one of these. Special thanks to the guys who put us up for the night, and for showing us around your shop.
Thanks to Berkeley for being nice as hell. I'll send you guys an email shortly.

Arizona... what kind of turbo oil feed pressures are you seeing? That throttle-off oil plume seems like the same problem we used to have. A simple restrictor has really helped to alleviate the problem.

-Kirk

_Doug_
04-18-2005, 11:02 PM
We finally installed a needle valve rather than a gate valve to regulate the pressure with better resolution. We had it down to about 5-7psi. The other problem is that we didn't have a waste-gate controller and no map for positive intake pressures. Thus, oil wasn't being used because the turbo wasn't spooling and then it backed-up which led to it being sucked through the intake compressor under the massive intake vacuum from engine braking. We're going to solve the problem by scavenging from the turbo itself and by getting our waste-gate controller working. Thanks for the suggestion.

I had a great time. The video of our wing breaking off is awesome. Hopefully nobody sees it, it's kind of embarrasing.
