I've never looked into Nats before, always just autoxed for fun, and usually in 2-3 different cars or classes in a season. What is the requirement to get to Nats? Do you just pay and show up? Or is there qualifying?

Neil S
06-16-2005, 04:23 PM
You are supposed to attend a Divisional or National Tour event, however if you don't there is a $70 waiver (not sure on that price). However registration for the other events is usually $55 so its worth going to a Divisional/National Tour event if there is one near you.

The total entry fee if you dont go to a divisional is $170. Subtract the $70 waiver if you do...No qualifying

There is a 1250 car limit which has been either filled or gotten close the last few years. Other than that all you need is a car that conforms to the class rules(they are much more strict at nationals).

Do they run FSAE cars in their own class or is it in AMod?

A FSAE legal car is AMod legal, right? Of course, we can yank the restrictor though.

Neil S
06-16-2005, 06:24 PM
FSAE has its own class now. I think that AMod has a weight minimum, not positive on that though.

Denny Trimble
06-16-2005, 06:40 PM
FSAE cars can run in AMod if they meet the rules of the year they were entered in an FSAE competition (restrictor must be in place).

If you take the restrictor off, you must meet the other Amod rules (minimum wheelbase 72", minimum weight with driver 900lbs, if I recall correctly).

At all events except Nationals, FSAE-legal cars run in AMod. At Nationals, they have a special FSAE class for FSAE cars only.

The SCCA rulebook is online if you want to check these out, though there were some errors (kart rules snuck in) in the original document this year.

D'oh! Well that doesn't mean I still can't yank the restrictor for some non-competition fun.

And thats probably a good thing anyways, all the other cars there would have even more of an advantage w/o the restrictor over ours.

If the planets align, I'd love to bring our car down to this.

Some regions have an FSAE class at local autocrosses.

The St. Louis area SCCA has an FSAE class that we use all the time. This past weekend, Washington University from St. Louis showed up as well.

Basically, if you run your car at Nationals, it has to meet the same rules as competition.

...and Dr. Bob has been known to bring a restrictor gage.

Unfortunately, I won't be one of the drivers for UMR this year at Nationals- I'll miss too much of the summer autocrossing while I'm away working. That makes two years in a row of missing Nationals for me.

Denny,
You seem to have added some analysis to your reading of the rules. Check out 3.8.E (pg 31) and 18.5 (pg 126). Hmmmm.... How open do you think Dr. Woods is to alternative rules interpretations?

WWU is talking about attending this year. I think I may try to make it out either way.

http://www.scca.com/_filelibrary/File/2005SoloRules.pdf
(Note- there is a copy/paste error in the FSAE section starting on page 127; some kart rules were thrown in that make no sense for an FSAE car.)

James, I guess you're right, it doesn't say "the year they were entered", it just says the cars must conform to current or previous years FSAE specs.

Anybody have a copy of the 1993 FSAE rules around so I can bring a sucker car to Nationals? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

We spent all our money last month, so it's not looking so good for us to get to Topeka in September. But, if WWU goes, perhaps we can hitch a ride and share costs.

Dr. Bob Woods

FSAE has its own class. Even though the rules are not stated correctly in the Solo II rules book and the FSAE section got chopped with the F125 section, here are the rules we will go by: The car must have entered the national FSAE competition since 1985, it must have the proper restrictor for the fuel used (18mm M85, 19mm E85, and 20mm gasoline), and it must meet the current aero rules. You don't want to run A-mod at Nationals.

UTA will bring at least 2 and most likely 3 cars, and will enter the ladies class as well.

I would really encourage more participation. It is a great time for us to socialize and to see some really great driving. Please respond to this list if you are planning to attend.

Kansas will be there this year with 2, possibly 3 cars. We will also be entering 2 ladies.

If anyone needs accomodations during Nationals week, let us know. We have several people willing to take guests for a day or two...Forbes is only 20-30 minutes from our campus.

email eohlde@ku.edu with any questions

So you can enter an unrestricted 66" wheelbase car in AM at the local level any time, but you cannot compete with it at the national level ever (in any class)?

If your university missed registration one year but built a car anyway, that specific car can never be driven at Solo2 nationals?

Denny Trimble
08-03-2005, 10:51 PM
Locally, you can probably run unrestricted. Western has run their 900/carbs car here a few times.

You might be able to enter an FSAE car without a restrictor in AM at a National event, but you can be protested and you will lose, of course.

If your school missed registration but still built a car, I assume they would enter it in the next competition. It would then be eligible.

I'll be there for both the ProSolo Finale and Solo2 Nationals, but in ES, not FSAE. This will be my 4th year at Nationals, 3rd for my codriver. Come say hi if you guys are around. Black MR2 with University of Florida Engineering sticker on back window. Both my codriver and myself are ME's.

What hotels are everyone staying at? Any teams from out here on the east coast going, we're looking for someone to split transportation with. Mike

Neil S
08-10-2005, 07:32 AM
We're going to stay with the KU guys, contact Erich Ohlde (eohlde@ku.edu). If your set on a hotel though there is a brand new Super 8 right by Forbes, I think it was $59/night for two queens.

Erich Ohlde
08-11-2005, 10:32 AM
If anyone doesn't have the coinage to stay in a hotel i'm sure KU can find some accommodations for ya. email me.

Dr. Bob usually gets us all together on the second day and takes an FSAE picture.

Plus this year there is going to be some good competition between Nick Roberts and Erick Kohler. We are getting a lot of testing done on the KU car and it is getting faster than it was at the UTA weekend. Go mechanical grip!!!! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Mike Cook

addendum to my previous post:
The KU FSAE shop/ machine shop/welding shop/whatever. will be available for teams to use. also if a team doesn't have an enclosed trailer we can probably store your car in our FSAE shop.

In short. we at KU are willing to do just about anything to get FSAE teams to run their car at nationals. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

so OU you better bring your car (thats right kyle) and strap it to our chassis dyno at some point, 45 hp... hah i'll bring it up to at least although i wont get it anywhere close to our 85+ gotta keep our edge somehow http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Everyone is always up for more power. Murray should have better lap times this year also, we're bringing some good R25As with us for the 2005 car, still on R35 for the 2004 though (if anyone has some R25As 20x13x7s that have at least a weekend left in them please let me know)

Erich Ohlde
08-11-2005, 09:50 PM
Niel also requests any R6 motors. He has a habit of putting big nasty holes in them.

I wondering if i'm ever going to stop giving you **** about motors

Neil S
08-12-2005, 12:43 PM
Maybe some day...if I can make one last an entire weekend for once.

You're letting me drive your 2005 car the Monday before Nationals right?

Erich Ohlde
08-12-2005, 06:41 PM
You can drive the 05 and the 04. and we will even let you drive on used motor oil too. It won't blow.

The rule of thumb is it's up to the competitor to class themselves. You could show up with your FSAE car in H-stock, but rest assured, if you did that you would be protested. If you ran a-mod but finished out of the trophies, chances are no one would waste their time to protest you.

Likewise, if the car never went to competition, you'd probably never be protested unless someone is a total ass.

I look forward to seeing a bunch of fsae guys up in Topeka. I'll probably wander up while you guys are running and shoot the shit some, unless I have to work during that heat.

Hey everyone,

This years Nationals was as crazy as ever. I am sure you guys know that the weather was rainy, sunny, rainy, sunny, rainy, sunny all in the matter of about 2 hours. However, we were really fortunate for the first day it poored during the third heat. Of course, we all got a little wet, but by the teme the fourth heat started, the track was 80% dry. By second runs, the clean line was dry. And by third runs, temperatures started dropping and the track cooled off. Just to give you an idea of how late things ran, cars were running their last runs of the 5th heat (of 6) with their headlights on. Poor C-modified guys.

Other crazy events like the North Course getting torn apart by the heat previous caused huge delays. That is the main reason that we ran so late the first day.

The second day was what we all come to expect out of nationals. Nice temp, dry track, and a great surface on the south course. I think most would agree that the south course was much more technical with some difficult to spot turn in points. All I can say is watch the video, we will have it posted soon on our website. We also recorded g-data with the g-analyst. There is a series of walls on the North side of the south course and we recorded 1.7 turning into it, 1.78, 1.84, and 2.05 lateral g's through the maneuver. I <3 geez!!!!

One thing I do want to say is we could have our own heat at nationals if half of the current cars built for FSAE showed up. There was a field of 55 super stock drivers and I know we make more cars than they do every year. I hope more teams make the effort to make an appearance at SCCA Nationals in the future. It is a lot of fun and definitely not the Formula SAE environment. We are doing what these cars were built to do, race.

Well, hope I didn't make this too long of a read.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped out the Maryland FSAE team. Taking apart half the car just to fit it in the van was interesting to say the least. It was struggle for us with only two guys but it totally worked out! More teams should come out. It is a great experience. Thanks
