Just wondering what automotive taste of the rest of the Formula SAE members was.

SO what do you drive and why?

For me

91 Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo
and
90 Eagle Talon TSi AWD (winter beater)

Reason: if you dident notice i like turbo cars

I put in light-up squirters, a triple deck wing, and two tanks of NAWZ! I can't have my car top out at 140!

Actually, it's a cheap car to own and modify. A good contender in C Street Prepared.

I'd been meaning to start it myself http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What I drive:
Fiats...
'78 128 Rally (FSP autox car)
'76 128 Sedan (under resto)
'73 128 Sedan (basket case awaiting resto)
'86 X1/9 (daily driver)
'68 124 Wagon (parts hauler)

The Rally is my autox/hillclimb car. I was prepping it for FSP autox competition until I joined FSAE two years ago. After graduation this year I'll start racing it again.
http://www.mirafiori.com/~courtney/racing/autox/court_autox_rally1.jpg

Why Fiats? A 124 Spider was my first car and I've been into them since. Inexpensive, great engineering, and everyone else seems to drive a lowered Japanese import, so I drive a lowered Italian import http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Okay, I'll be a dork and reply right after my team-mate.

'97 Honda Civic CX. Specs=> http://geocities.com/stscxr/stscxr_cx.htm

Campained in Street Touring-S since '99.

Why did I get it? Cause 5 of my past 11 cars were civics and I love 'em (even if to many people do too). And I thought I was going to be doing the hour commute to CSU-Northridge at the time. Besides 42mpg highway and 37mpg on the track ain't bad.

i have a 92 civic w/ a 1.8L DOHC VTEC; ITR pistons, cams & con rods, & 75hp N20.

also APEXi N1 suspension, volk wheels, and other stuff.

heres a pic (http://www.driversimage.com/stock/EGtom1.jpg)

I auto-x it, but with the engine swap my classification sucks so i dont do it often. I do mostly drag racing w/ a best time of 13.002 at 108.8MPH...maybe thats why im on the engine team for FSAE. from one Honda 4cyl to another..

1965 Chevrolet Malibu (partially completed)
1950 Chevrolet pickup (partially completed)

both made to look good but they're not much use on the track, actually they are worthless on the track.

And the daily driver is the 1986 Pontiac Parisiene (think of your grandpa's big ass boat) and don't ask how to pronounce it, I don't know. This rig gets a whopping 18 mpg on the highway. It can haul six people (comfortably), fit 2 Honda F4 engines, my bicycle and a fat chick in the trunk and still not bottom out.

Any one else have any love for engines with more than 6 cylinders?

86 Camaro, 2.8 5spd 200HP
89 Daytona, N/A http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif for a winter beater

They're both good on gas, and the Camaro runs 14's on regular......the first time you run a 7000RPM shift with a GM 6-cyl is a little leary. I'm used to it now, and love blowin the doors off of most of the kids who cruise around here.

1960 Ford F100
351W HO, 5spd manual w/overdrive, IFS, road race spec torsion bars

This poor beast gets me back and forth between work in Nevada and school in Michigan every three months (Kettering is a coop school). As you can see Michigan hasn't been kind to her. The 2002 version of our car just BARELY fits.

While I'm in Nevada I drive a 78' Datsun 280Z and an 81' 280ZX that function as rally/autocross/commuter cars. I paid $200 for the pair, so between the two I usually have one running.

I am lucky enough to roll around in a '91 buick riviera, with the fake cloth top (which I had to rivet back on after it peeled off while doing 90 in michigan). I also have the 170,000 mile manumatic transmission, which requires you to hold the pedal to the floor in order to downshift when passing. My car is my main motivation for finishing school. I hate everyone driving a nice car right now. Just so you know.

Thanks for the complements.

Don't be too jealous, nice cars are high maintenance to go along with the fun factor. Plus, I don't even have the Buick at school anyway... my dad gets to drive it.

She runs mid-12s in street trim and could possibly run high 11s with race fuel and slicks.

Right now its a 1981 VW rabbit pickup with a passat 2L16V engine (winter car)

My summer car is an 81 VW Scirocco (MKI) 2.0L 16V with custom EFI, cams, header, port and polished 1.8 head, lightened flywheel, oil cooler, close ratio tranny with quaife differential, poly susp bushings, race springs/shocks. Makes 135hp/135ftlb at the wheels. Weighs less than 2000lbs too.

I like it because it's a super sporty German car (thanks to some modifications) with a great Italian body design. Best of both worlds. VW dropped the Italian designer for the MKII, and I don't find it as attractive.

A 1993 Honda Accord DX. MT, A/C, and that is about it for luxury! Paid $2750 for it in Jan. 2001. Only has had one crippling problem - the clutch slave cylinder went out, of course while I was on vacation far from where I could repair it! Why do I drive this car - cheap, very cheap, and very reliable. Plus, since it is still worth about $4000 on the retail market, it's kind of an investment!

Oh, it'll get about 32mpg on the highway, but the way I drive it around town it only seems to get about 23mpg, go figure!

Takes me snowboarding with no issues, holds its own at 130+ mph during open track days and does 0-60 in 3.89 seconds. Not too bad for a $3500 car with some basic mods and it still gets ~27 mpg on the highway.

Dan Deussen @ Weber Motor
04-03-2003, 04:27 AM
Well Matt,

sorry to say but you are two days late for April Fools Day or you simply mistyped your 0-60 time.

I really don't think you are pushing 400+ hp. With your car, that's what it would take for that type of acceleration, unless you are refering to km not miles.

The original turbo Talon has aboutt 200 horses and takes about 6 seconds. I really don't think you shaved two seconds off that time with what you refer to as "basic mods".

Richard Lewis
04-03-2003, 10:12 AM
I could see sub 4 second 0-60 times in that car... its all about the AWD launch... Make yourself a boost controller for $20, add a decent intercooler and I think those numbers are achievable if you drive it like you hate it.

My "basic mods" might be a little skewed compared to others. I have a larger turbo (16G), intercooler, cams, polished head and all the supporting fuel componants. The 3.89 sec 0-60 was done with race gas at the track. It pushes a little under 400 HP at the engine according to trap speeds.

Dan Deussen @ Weber Motor
04-04-2003, 11:56 AM
Well if you call all that "basic mods" then I would like to know what you would do when you do the "advanced mods"!!! :-)

1G DSMs are fast for cheap, low 12s on stock turbos, 11 sec street/daily driven cars. They can become money pits though, but so is my car.

I've run quite a bit with philly region. In fact, those pictures were taken at Nazareth when i was co-driving with Rob Leone while his MR2 was out of service. I think he's driving in that 2nd pic.

I haven't run with Philly region for about a year due to other racing projects, but I ran a little more than two full seasons. I ran winter season 2001 through the end of the summer of 2002. I also ran quit a bit with the NNJ and SJR crowds.

I suppose most of you haven't had the misfortune to drive a Mitsubishi (Bitsarmising/Bitsarshiti) Sigma. Mine is an old 1981 model 2.6lt 4cyl muscle car. This is my day to day traveller, and although I bag it out, it's done over 440,000km and doesn't miss a beat. I have a project vehicle though, which is a 1969 HT Holden Kingswood. It has a 253 under the bonnet. Nice old classic chromey three on the tree. Unfortunately unregistered, so I'm not driving it at the moment.

had a mitsubishi magna from '94, that was a really good car. acceptable engine, pretty hopeless handling, but it had the best fuel economy i had ever seen and never let me down once. the only problem with it was that when the f&%kwits serviced it, they adjusted (or broke) something which made it run like crap when it was cold. had a nice loud stereo in it too, i like my music. sadly, this wonderful car was sold to a little old italian lady cause i was out of cash. ive always wondered if all italians, even little old ladies, enjoy doof-doof music...

my parents had the stupidity to buy a 2000 model magna, the v6. the car has some of the worst handling characteristics i have ever felt. the v6 is a complete overkill, not because its too powerful, but because the front wheel drive couldnt even get the power of a lawnmower to the ground. has the turning circle of a b-double semi tralier. the accelerator goes from 0 throttle to 100% in 1mm, and the other 100mm of travel does nothing. has very powerful power steering, but as soon as you turn the wheel quickly it cant keep up. great fun when you are trying to turn into a sidestreet and the stupid steering cant turn quick enough.

anyway, guess i shouldnt really whinge about a free car, but its just such a piece of shit i cant help myself!

then there are some days when i get to drive the family's supercharged calais... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey all,
My daily driver is an '89 Z24 2.8 with some nice mods:
Port and polished heads
Crane Cams Powermax Cam and lifters
Stock headers - Borla 2.5" Exhaust (after collector)
Wiseco Pistons
Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch
Moroso Ignition and Wires
Poly Suspension Bushing (energy suspension)
Eibach lowering Springs (waiting for me at home)
Koni Sport Shocks (waiting for installation)
Might get a 2 stage NOS kit, but not sure yet...I have no numbers for power right now..it's back home and I'm in Switzerland..and most of this was done before I left!

I also have an '82 Honda CB900F Super Sport...she may be old but she'll lay to waste most 90's 600's and 900's and every ricer ego I've encountered! (150 bhp / 80 lb-ft torque..., around 600 lbs with me on it, ricers have no hope in hell!)...not bad for a 21 year old bike! Stock power is 110 I believe and I have squeeked 150 out of it (high -lift cams, larger valves, 2" exhaust, K&N filter, Modified Intake, Wiseco Ceramic Pistons waiting for me at home)..she's fast!

Well, I sold the '66 Mustang and picked up a '79 Trans Am Special Edition. Besides the TA, I have a few beater cars lying around that Somehow manage to stay together. The most fun comes when the floor pans are gone and you have a fred flinstone car, with barely any front fenders left, and the only thing holding the car together is the thing that's destroying it, rust. I don't think of rust as a bad thing, just as an easy way to lighten the car whenever I hit something...

That should put me just shy of 300hp. i also have upgraded to Silverstar bulbs up front and some drilled slotted rotors and ceramic pads. My ride is an '83 Mitsubishi ute, just the thing for hauling test equipment and body moulds around. It's no performance machine, but I have a bit of fun fangin' through the backblocks every now and then. I was getting about 800 - 900 km off a tank of diesel driving around the countryside with my summer job, but it's a bit thirstier in the city. Just like me, really! Got a bit over 200000 on the clock without missing a beat, until I picked up a load of bad fuel last week. New fuel filter and a mouthful of diesel later and she's good as gold http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hey Dan and Kevin, where do you get all the money from? I drive a '90 toyota corolla with over 242,000 miles on it. Still runs great and sounds better than most late nineties cars. No mods, only replacement parts, which is why it runs so good now. I can't stand it when people ruin their cars by not replacing simple little parts. Oh, I do have some pimpin hub caps on it http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

i paid 4500 for the porsche. it ran for 2 years, then the engine stopped working. i put 5k into it for a new engine and a bunch of mods and it was running again. sold it for 4k without an interior, but with two engines. i have worked jobs from the time i was 16, so buying the car wasn't a problem. my parents disapproved of me buying the porsche, and never gave me a cent.

as for the evo, well i still owe quite a bit on that yet http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Bimmer = $3500
951 = $4700

Of course I'm putting another $6-8k in the 951, but 2.7L big bore motors don't come cheap! I also bought the car with a blown motor, which is why it was such a "deal". Still at $12k, its much cheaper than I could've paid for one with the same goodies installed and a fresh bottom end.

My biggest problem is my "diversified portfolio". At one point I had 6 cars in my name. They were in no less than 4 different places at any one time. And only 1.5 of them ran. I'm inching closer to the point of just having a street car and a track car, but I have 2 more to sell before that happens. Anyone want to buy a Daytona? How about a track prepped 944?

It's been a while since I first posted... still have the 924S, but haven't touched it in a while. Will be turned into a track car shortly.

Cars that have passed...
1993 Subaru Impreza - RIP (bare bones 1.8L FWD wagon that was begging for a WRX or 2.5RS engine/driveline after some lady pulled out in front of me... took the cheque instead as I wouldn't have had the swap ready by winter)

1990 Acura Integra DA9 - SOLD (nice solid car, but needed major suspension work... fixed quite a bit of it and sold it due to finding the car below)

Current:
1997 Jetta GL 1.9L TD-IDI - my daily driver. Picked it up with only 206 000 kms on the clock... has averaged 36+ mpg even though I drive the crap out of it and is in need of a turbo rebuild. It's currently sitting on oldskool/rare 15" OMP/Mille Miglia rally wheels and Neuspeed/Bilstein sport suspension goods. I hope to have an aluminum skidplate fabricated before ski season rolls in. The only other thing needed to complete the rally-look are rally mudflaps and the driving lights to compliment the Bosch yellow fogs.

My real car is my '67 Mustang:

http://photos-662.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v11/181/98/9619773/n9619773_8614662_8005.jpg

I restored/modified it in high school, the only thing its seen the shop for was the engine block and crank for machining. Only had it dynoed once, right after I finished it, and it made 250HP at the wheels with a 15:1 AFR. Got a better carb on it (which still needs a lot of tunning) and now traction is a big problem. How big? Well, I'm running the 1/8th mile at 82MPH, but my best E.T. is only 9.14. 60ft times are around 2.3's http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Got a lot of mods in it and a LOT of time, it was a rust-heap when I got it.

My other ride is a 1994 Volvo 850 Wagon. You can see it in the background in this photo:
http://photos-412.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v11/181/98/9619773/n9619773_12827412_2732.jpg

It's got more than 300,000 miles on it. I don't know exactly because the odometer broke at 273,000 3 years ago. It's on its second engine now, because the owners before me (the parents) somehow forgot to keep oil in it... Drove it 1.5 miles home with NO bearing on the number 2 rod. A little slappy. Great pit car. Still gets 30MPG on the highway. Its raging 170 HP 5-cyl is a torqueless wonder.

Started off with a junk, green 1972 Volkswagen Beetle and restored it. I know, weird first car, but it was cheap and is what got me into cars and engineering in the first place. So it worked out all right.
I now drive a red '84 Porsche 944 that I got real cheap because the clutch and water pump were shot and nobody knew how to fix it. I wish it was the 944 Turbo model, but maybe one of these days I will upgrade! This summer my co-op at Toyota allowed me to get my new toy pictured at left
1999 VFR 800 Interceptor
I absolutely love this bike!!! Actually haven't even driven my car at all this summer. I would be a little worried about it not starting, but you can't beat German Engineering for performance and reliability!

My first car was a 1974 Mk1 Escort.

For anyone who has never heard of this car outside the UK, it is the most successful race / rally car in the world. Weighed about 1850lbs (850kg) had a live rear axle and fook all grip. I fitted a fuel injected 2.0 engine and it went well. Stripped out and caged. Damn I miss it!

1993 Chevy 3/4 ton long bed - I like trucks. Tows everything I've hooked up so far without a hickup. Slow as dog crap, but didn't have a problem.

2001 Pontiac Sunfire base model, 3spd automatic.
proclaimed the "Sunflower" and the "On-Fire"

And being next to a Maserati just brings out the terrible engineering that went into my car. Thanks GM..

Bump from the grave I guess, but I guess I'll try and dig up a few pictures of the piece.

Right after the turbo install

I'm estimating around 270whp at 16psi, and I could take it up to Superchips to see what it puts down, but I just haven't yet. I get complements on the car often, and it has one of the cleanest Miata engine bays I have ever seen.

It is a 2000 LS model, with the torsen, bose audio, and power everything. It has a depowered steering rack, and the A/C ripped out (bad idea in FL, but it wasn't working at the time).

Mods:

Custom turbo kit using the HKS T25 manifold.
MS1 Standalone
RX7 550cc injectors
Custom engine wiretuck
Mishimoto radiator
Clutchnet 3X solid disk clutch (engages like stock just a little stiffer)
Currently has a turn down exhaust emptying just before the differential.
Vmaxx coilovers
Sortmax 002s

I drive an E30. Why? It should not even be asked, seeing how much ass kicking this car can do.

It's an E30 with an S50 swap. The turbo is a GT35.

It's still my daily driver, but once some money rolls in, it's becoming a track rat.

I just picked up an 04 Volvo S60R 6 speed.
I'm considering selling it after the warranty is up though due to a weak AWD drivetrain that will fail if I race it.

This car has so much win. I would trade my e46 for it in a heartbeat.

1.6 L 4 banger 96 G.E.O. Prizon I mean Prizm
100 HP at 5,600 RPM (too bad it doesnt have a tach to find such rediculous power at)
Faded Red, each panel is a different shade
Steelies on one side bc the hub caps fell off
It is a stick though so I rev match the crap out of it.

Reason: trying to make the first car I purchase on my own a Stingray. Besides, chicks dig the G.E.O.

Our University doesn't allow students to own/drive any form of "motorized vehicles" within campus. So its on foot for me http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Or one of the local eco-friendly buses @ Rs 3(6 cents) per ride

Can't wait to have my own.... motorized vehicle

Its dissappointing you guys don't even get to test there with a campus as big as yours!

NO we do get to test in campus. Infact we are the only lucky few ones who have driven a car in campus legally thanks to Baja and FS. Its the perfect place to test a Baja but for FSAE the roads ain't flat enough.

I've developed a kind of a limo-fetish the last 3-4 years and after setting up my dad with a booooring Lexus LS430 I am running about in a '99 BMW face-lift 7-er, the last good looking 7 series.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1940/imag0016g.th.jpg (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/imag0016g.jpg/)

Money's been tight lately, but if things get any better any time soon a set of 18" 2-piece Alpina wheels is on the top of my list.
And if things get reaaaaaally good I would like to shove an S62 engine and get an M7 out of my litle barge...

I really love it. It's not grandpa's Audi, nor banker's S-Class. I also really enjoy the ever insisting comments about parking, economy and practical. Plus my gf's face when I'm going sideways (which I have been doing rather too much lately, and probably should dial down a bit http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) is simply priceless...

Hope to keep it forever... 208,000Km and still running like new http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

(unless customs stop the tax-rapes here in Greece and I get my hands on that 5.7 Alpina B12 I've been stalking in Germany - or maybe an E39 M5)

There is some air under your tires. You might want to address that.

(only heckling, looks like a blast!)

Yea, that was the first event on my current suspension so I was still setting-up the car http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif . That problem and excessive roll has since been solved
