I was an aero major and my advisor pissed me off and the FSAE car was the first thing I saw walking out of the building. I changed to ME the next day and watched my GPA tank over the next few years.

Where are we going? And why are we in this handbasket?!

You get to play with racecars on somebody else's dime... OK, who am I kidding, many of us pour $1000's into these things to get them going... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Didn't anyone else to do it to meet all the women involved? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I thought I was going in, until I remembered that my school is 80% dudes /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. So I had nothing better to do than stick with it. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Wow, it almost feels like this handbasket is falling fast. Wait, is it getting hotter or is it just me.

I just really no one is lying when they say that companies like this sort of experience, because if not.

petrolhead, pure and simple. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif in adelaide uni, f-sae counts as our final year design project (ie, as one of our courses for the degree). there seems to be 2 choices for final year projects, either yet another anti-vibration mirror(or something equally as exciting), or build and race a fsae car. hmmm, hard choice... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yeah, the revhead thing has a big part to play.

Although, after doing a one year co-op student placement with Holden and being exposed to real engineering in the auto industry, I realised the skills gained in running a FSAE team are much more usefull than 4 years of whirling shaft analysis or some garbage like that.

Not to mention that the projects on offer by the uni are sooooo bad(ie borring), we went ahead and started fsae.

Oh and im sure that secretly we all want to be working in F1 one day.

I joined because I knew FSAE would boost my GPA, and plus I wanted more relaxation time in the month of May.

Ok I joined my SAE team to releive the boredom of academic life.... have since become a petrol head, been to the states and Australia, oh and have now ended up as team leader!! Not bad going for a girl ;-p

BOOST your GPA?? what are you nuts??

FSAE does exactly the opposite!!!

Sam, dont post late at night! Charlie was being sarcastic. he actually joined because he enjoys pain and thinks sleep deprivation is good for you.

Two reasons,
One because I love cars and find all this chassis dynamics stuff fascinating, and two, that its a must have when looking for race team jobs.

Sam, I agree. We have straight distinction students that arent getting any of their assignments done anymore http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The girls at parties think it is "interesting"¯.

9
I love it when people ask, "oh is that the solar car we saw on television".

8
I wanted to fail solid mechanics 3 times.

7
I enjoy 18-hour straight sessions squinting at tiny pieces of design detail on a 19-inch monitor.

6
I love trying to find "Runstadler, P.W. 1975, Diffuser Data Book, Creare Inc., Technical Notes 186, Hanover"¯.... Because; as far as I can figure from 28 hours of searching dogsh_yte library catalogues all over the planet, I come to the conclusion it is held only by Creare. Later I find that Creare don't really want to give an undergrad a copy (although a request for a copy made by a librarian is OK).

5
I like my hernia.

4
My lecturer provides valuable input to the design that helps me integrate my theoretical knowledge to the "real world application"¯

3
I think it is great that an engineering department is keen to let students use lathes and milling machines.

2
I think "suspension analyser 3D"¯ is a user-friendly package, and I should really learn how to "think in inches"¯.

1
I love wheel suppliers telling me about the "real world", when they cant send you an engineering drawing, don't have a working fax machine, insist on up front payment (when they can't even fax you an invoice), cant figure out how much their wheels actually weigh; and when you ask "have you actually started making those wheels yet", they respond "what do you want" and proceed to carry on about how you have to organise shipping for the wheels you are about to pay for (up front) that they haven't made (8 weeks after receiving a purchase order acknowledging a quoted lead time of 6 weeks.)

Nice top ten list.

For me:

Boredom and an interest in something other than comp. eng. These will be some of the few practical skills I will leave with when I'm done.

It also doesn't hurt that attractive members of the opposite gender are interested in watching us zip around the parking lot. Although they don't seem to have the same appreciation of the other aspects of this. I would have figured a guy who can machine an upright has much more apeal than one who can drive fast and hard. Go figure.

This will be our first year at the Formula Student, and I'd like to know what all the team members do during the weeks before the race.

I think that everybody should work 24 hours a day, to finish, test and setup the car, and to prepare the reports.
The exams should wait.

Am I crazy/fanatic or do you think I'm right?

We just do it, because parties every nigth began to be boring, and because we need no sleep, we had to start something different. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Engineers get laid???
No way!!! I mean in specifics, engineers that do FSAE... I mean, I'm even pittying the workshop guys who are struggling, and they are the fully buff macho ones...!

As for us FSAE peeps getting out there and getting into a REAL relationship, its like being in the militry... You can't marry a civillian without suffering the consequences of them not understanding your passion for sleeping on worshop floors, eating frozen, week old Pizza and not showering for a few days!!!

I think i`m gonna transfer to a uni out of this country.
You see, here engineers are seen as geeky, skinny, thick glasses for the poor eyesight developed from excessive computer monitor use, poor skin due to being inside during daylight and eating junk food, not to sociable and unable to make conversation with the opposite sex unless its over the internet!!!!!
I`ve been trying to dispell this stereotype for the last 3 years i`ve been here at uni but its a hard job for one man to do. I`ve partied hard and tried to sleep with lots of women in an atempt to improve our reputation, but generally the last thing i mention is FSAE. This would involve a large complicated explaination that would put the girl off as i descend back into the aformentioned geek mode.
Just mention fast racing cars!!!!!!

As for why i`m doing it. Its my final year project and as for so many people, our optional projects suck!!!!!

Word to ya moms but i came to drop bombs!!!!!
