Dartmouth Formula Racing is also updating it's blog (I hope): http://engineering.dartmouth.edu/dfr/Formula_Hybrid/Blog/Blog.html

Awesome!

Why does this not get more attention peoples

How is the competition going Henning?

Was out there yesterday, forgot to bring camera... doh

A couple of really interesting looking cars, for those you that don't know the F Hybrid cars are supposed to based around old FSAE chassis.

A couple of different approaches to the drivetrain, first dynamic events today (autocross and acceleration). A couple of teams had problems yesterday with getting everything to work. We'll see today.

I'll second the "awesome" above. Please keep us updated. How many teams? Where are they from? Some tech specs on the cars? Any info most appreciated.

Cheers, and good luck to all

Good to see that atleast 2 people in the FSAE community are interested in hybrids, I have a feeling we will be seeing more of them in the future...

So, yesterday was first day of dynamic events, acceleration and autocross. Many teams (or even all?) had problems (with varying magnitude) with their drivetrains. Some of the cars didn't even run at all because of blown capacitator, fuses and other sparky stuff. Best acceleration time was 4.97 (even though rumors suggest that Dartmouth's car has done 3.7 with their 70 hp electric motor).

There were several different approaches to the drivetrains, some of the cars showed up as pure electric cars (thus only competing in acceleration and autocross). Others had parallell drivetrains (such as the Toyota Prius). Some had engines running at constant revs driving a generator that charged capacitators/batteries that powered the electric motor. First ever (?) FWD drive FSAE car made an apperance, Dartmouth '05 FSAE car has been converted into a test bench for front wheel regenerative braking. Yale was the only team that showed up with a non ex-FSAE chassis. And no, there is no tilt over test...

To sum things up, many of these cars had well sorted (maybe not top FSAE style) mechanical systems but needed more testing of electrical systems. Many more schools are starting this for next year, there were a whole bunch of people from other schools around, taking picutres and making notes.

Just had to put this is, the judges misstook the intake for the exhaust for noise test...

Looks like we have a winner...

Local Newspaper Article (http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=Hybrid+auto+competition+offe rs+glimpse+of+future&articleId=c34a6a46-9724-42b6-8c87-f71070bff909)

Please post more pics. I know Drexel was suppose to have a team, but I never saw or heard of anything after the first month. Also if people could label pics so we know who's car we are looking at.

Pics of the Yale car also.

Cheers for the updates everyone, and congrats to McGill for taking the overall (at least according to the newpaper article - official results?). In fact congrats to all for taking on something new and making a go of it. I know at our end, the movers and shakers within our uni are really wanting us to move into some more environmentally friendly avenues of research.

I'd really like to get some info on how many teams competed, where they were from, info on the different layouts, what sort of performance figures they were achieving, etc. I imagine some such data will get posted on the website, but any other updates would be really appreciated.

Well done all, and congrats especially to the Dartmouth crew for all their efforts in bringing this to our attention.

Cheers

We had 10 teams that registered for the competition, but only 7 showed up. Dartmouth brought in 2 or maybe 3 cars. And then, we have Embry-Riddle Aero. Univ, Yale U., Ill. Inst of Tech., Florida Tech (i might be missing a school here).

McGill had a very simple and reliable car and deserved the no 1 spot. Embry-Riddle came in 2nd but they were awarded Best Hybrid System Award and Best Innovation Award by Daimler Chrysler.

Im pretty sure all the lap times are going to be posted on SAE website, but they're still slow compared to the regular FSAE cars. There was an all electric car, from FIT or IIT, which seems to go really fast.

Yale U. almost topple over their car at one of the turn. I hope someone from the team could post a video of that.

Also, to help you guys figure out who's who, the no 12 car is IIT (illinois inst. of tech). Car no 69 is FIT (florida tech). Blue car no 11 is Embry-Riddle. Car no 95 that looks like a Baja car is Yale U. The car that has blue gloves on its sidepod is McGill. And any green car in the picture is from Dartmouth.

I wanna say job well done to Dartmouth and everybody that was involved in the organization of the Formula Hybrid Competition. It was a great event and everything went pretty smooth. I dont have any complaints about the competition and the whole event, although i really hope that in the future, the Rules and Regulation committee will forbid any first year car. This is to encourage any first year team to compete in the regular FSAE competition so that they can learn from other competitors about the car as a whole and not just on the hybrid system.

Not sure about the first year cars exclusion. It seems the best car will be one designed around the hybrid drivetrain from day one.

I too would think a first year exclusion would be inappropriate as it will exclude teams. Yale and IIT don't have FSAE teams yet they built cars for the hybrid competition. It very well could be the fact that it is a hybrid that would make a school want to compete. Secondly, many of the hybrids based on previous FSAE cars are barely recognizable as their former selfs having had complete drive train and and engine redesigns.

I guess Embry-Riddle has a better PR department than others. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Totally awesome guys! Congrats on competing in the F Hybrid competition. You should all be really proud. I wish I had the support here to do a hybrid, but the mechies are always telling me how much they hate electrons. hahaha.

Congrats again, was great to see some photos. Would like to see some videos too!

Cheers,

It doesn't look like Embry Riddle's front wing would produce much down force, or was it just supposed to keep cones out of the suspension?

thanks for the links charlie http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. I wonder how that got there. I dont remember having SpeedTV doing any interviews.

Derek, the front wing isnt functional. It's mainly for looks. We think that it helps to have it there being that we're an aviation school. The bodywork is a carry on from last year. And i think the car will look exactly the same in the next year or two since our advisor would like the students to spend all the time and effort on the hybrid development.
