Red Bull is hosting a Formula SAE track day at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama on January 20. This will be a competitive event, consisting of three events similar to the dynamic events at competition.

The event is open to any FSAE team willing to make the drive. All teams interested in participating are urged to email bsflyer@gmail.com.

This is going to be a fun day. I hope to see you all there.

Has this event taken place in previous years?
Is it a one day event?
Do you have a list of teams already attending?

Thanks,

1. Yes, they tried it last year with a few teams and it was a lot of fun.

2. It is all day one day.

3. We are working on that, right now we are trying to see who would want to come and make sure we have enough people.

More info will be up soon once they have an idea how big it will be. This was a lot of fun last year with only 2 cars. This year we hope it will be much larger. Please ask questions or feel free to pm Ben Steele or myself. Thanks and hope everyone's new cars are going along great.

Is there any type of entrance fee for the event, and if so how much?

There might be a chance Clemson would come. Keep me in the loop about this, my email is wesleyj@clemson.edu if you have any sort of mailing list going.

Thanks,

Wes

That sounds awesome! I have wondered about trying to organise a similar thing here in the UK, although no necessarily with a sponsor like that.

Can someone tell me how this came about in the US - did Redbull contact some teams about doing it or was it vice versa?

Might like to contact them about a similar thing here... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

From my understanding, the Red Bull representative at Auburn got together with the Auburn team and set it up last year at a go-cart track (perfect FSAE sized road course). Our team from MTSU went but our car wasn't fully operational at the time, so we didn't compete. We still had a lot of fun. Very laid back.

Thats about it, We worked with them to make sure it would be safe and good for fsae cars.

Are you guys able to come this year?

Also anyone is able to come watch, but it would be nice if you tell us you are coming. thanks

Jenner I kinda of guessed that you might not jump the pond for this. I was asking sr20detjt if they would show up.

For everyone eles they are still open to more teams.

Auburn
Bama
Clemson
Southern Poly
Georgia Tech
MTSU

Try to let us know as soon as possible if you're coming. Red Bull would like to know how many teams to expect and we need to make sure that everybody gets all the info they need.

There will be tons of free Red Bull, of course, and last year there was a free barbeque dinner, if that helps with the decision-making.

Feel free to pm or email me with any questions.

Surely it wouldnt be too hard to get an event like this in the uk. Im sure a lot of the uk guys will be at autosport so its perfect to try and guage any sponsor intrest. As for team costs a transit for the day or two if its a treck so thats minimal costs, just to find a venue thats friendly and cheap!

Jenner Collins

Hey Scannee,

That is a good point about the Autosport show. Our team is going up and I will be there Friday, I could canvas other teams to gauge interest in whether they would be interested and then yes also speak to some sponsors about it.

Where abouts are you Scannee, are you with a team in the UK?

Cheers,

Scannee

Im with bell college, scotland. A few of our guys are down at autosport on thursday, im heading down for the friday. Ive seen the scandanavian event they hold each year and it looks fun. Im sure there would be more than enough intrested teams in the UK to get an event up, and it would be a nice chance to take along a sponsor to show them what there benifits lead to

The letter from Lauren Doyle mentions that the event will be held in the infield parking area. Is that referring to the large RV Parking area next to the turn 4 garage? Also, are we entering the track from the turn 4 tunnel or the turn 3 crossover?

Can someone post a schedule of events?

Would anyone be interested in seeing the Aprilia engine in person? I could see if I could borrow one for a day and bring it up.

Anyone got some images from the event?

How do those scores work?

TGrau
01-22-2007, 09:05 PM
We took alot of pics and vids. Right now we are working on getting all of them compiled onto one computer, so we should be able to get them up soon for all of you. The scoring was identical to the way FSAE is scored, 50 for skid pad, 75 for acceleration, 150 for autocross and 350 for endurance.

Mechanicaldan

Pictures hosted by www.FSAEnetwork.com (http://www.FSAEnetwork.com)

The autocross/endurance course was extremely tight. A noticeable amount of cones were clipped in corners. People were allowed right next to the course, which was much nicer than at Detroit, but there were some close calls due to cold tires, cold surface, and cars that are very traction limited. One very interesting note is that the top acceleration score was achieved using only 3rd gear, which meant very little wasted tire spin at the start.

Enjoy.

Unfortunately we had some drivetrain issues in the autocross that kept us from finishing the day. Thanks to Auburn for lending us a tripod so we could try to fix it.

Here's some of the photos I took.

I have some pictures and video. Most of the video is Auburn, however the pictures I have are comprehensive. I will get them up probably this evening!

Along slightly different lines. Has anyone tried to apply for the internship at the Redbull Velocity Lab? I can't get the submit button to work...

Red Bull has not yet announced any intentions regarding repeating the Red Bull Race. Last year they expressed an interest in doing it again but I have not heard anything since then. Assuming they want me to be involved again, I will let you guys know as soon as I hear something.

Matthew Bell

Thanks Ben for the response. Our adviser is constantly asking us if we will be doing this again and it kind of sucks to have to tell him "we don't know if they're even having it." Please keep us posted!

Folks (and especially those who came out to Talladega in 07!)-

With regret, Auburn announces that the Red Bull FSAE Shootout will not be held in 2008. There was a change in personnel at Red Bull, and by the time that everyone had finished asking 'what's happening', well, it was February. We would like to hold the practice competition again in January 2009. Instead of just waiting for our friends at Red Bull to tell us where and when, it is the intention of the Alabama Section of SAE to take this on as a signature Section activity. We will push the process in order to avoid bobbles like 08.

To those who had hoped to come out and do a practice competition with us, I apologize. We're sorry it didn't work out and will try again next year.
